Don't Flush!
Improper Disposal of Cloth Materials, Towels, Swiffers, or other
materials may be putting your home at risk!
AFEW MONTHS AGO, A SHORE REPORT article asked residents to make sure no one in the household
was flushing any Swiffer products, rags, or other similar materials. This includes cleaning
products labeled "flushable". Unfortunately this continues to be a problem.
All of the wastewater from your neighborhood is piped away from the neighborhood and ultimately
to a treatment plant by wastewater pipes and large wastewater pumps. These pumps and systems
are designed with redundant systems to insure that homes are not impacted in the event of a single
failure.
The Shorewood Public Works Department has had a number of issues with improper disposal
of towels, cloths and other materials that are being disposed of via the sanitary sewer system.
When improperly disposed of and flushed down bathroom stools, these items ultimately stop the
pumps that are vital to keeping the wastewater system functioning properly. If the system were to
completely fail, homes may be impacted.
The City is requesting your assistance in this matter. Proper disposal of towels, cloths, (such as
Swiffer products) and other similar materials should not be flushed down the toilet. Please notify
any cleaning personnel or contractors that may be working in your home of this information.
Your help in this is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact
Larry Brown, Director of Public Works, Lbrown@shorewoodpw.com, 952/474-3236.

Firewise Cabins
MosT MINNESOTANS HAVE made
summer in Minnesota official by
opening up the family cabin. The doors
have been opened to air it out, the spider
webs swiped away, and the boat launched.
Has the cabin been made Firewise?
Firewise is a program that was created
to improve the ability of homes and
cabins in wildland areas to survive a
wildfire. Wildland areas include forests,
heavy brush, open prairies, and wetlands.
Firewise tips:
. Create defensible space around your
cabin. This is area around the house
where vegetation has been modified
to reduce the wildfire threat. This
area should extend 30' feet from the
structure, but not exceed beyond the
property line. Multiple large trees
within the defensible space area should
be trimmed so the tops are not touching
within this space.
. Tree branches should not extend over
or under roof eaves and should not be
within fifteen-feet of a wood burning
appliance chimney.
. Remove dead, diseased and weakened
trees.
. Remove pine needles, leaves and debris
from the ground and in-between brush
and trees. Roofs and gutters must be
kept clean from these materials.
. Keep grass and weeds mowed to a
maximum height of 4 inches. Fire
spreads rapidly in dry grass and weeds.
Promptly dispose of leaves, branches
and other debris.
. Do not use the area under decks for
storage. Store firewood at least 15'
away from the house/cabin and decks.
. Ensure your address is clearly marked
and visible from the street.
. Install spark arresters over chimneys.
. Incorporate fire/fuel breaks in your
landscaping. These include stone or
concrete patios, ponds, rock paths and
sidewalks.
. Plan and rehearse an escape plan.
For more information put Firewise in your
search engine.

Top 1 0 Recycling Facts
IT IS AMAZING THE impact one household can have on the environment if inhabitants
get serious about recycling. Discuss the following facts with your family and see
how much you can do!
I. About 21 % of Minnesota's household garbage is recyclable
paper. Don't forget to recycle your mail, office and school
paper, magazines and catalogs, cardboard and other boxes,
like cereal boxes, shoe boxes and toothpaste boxes.
2. 186,400 tons of recyclable paper is thrown away each
year by residents in the Twin Cities metro area.
3. Twin Cities metro area residents recycle almost 1 million
pounds of paper every single day.
4. Recycled paper supplies more than 37% of the raw materials
used to make new paper products in the U.S. Demand continues to
increase, so every bit counts.
5. Recycling paper doesn't just save trees! Production of recycled paper uses 80%
less water, 65 percent less energy and produces 95% less air pollution than paper
production using raw materials.
6. The average American household receives more than 500 pieces of advertising mail
each year. Be sure to recycle your unwanted mail, including glossy and colored
papers. You can also recycle envelopes with windows.
7. Some people don't recycle their mail because they are concerned about protecting
their identity. However, mail and other papers are no safer in the trash. If you
shred your paper, you can still recycle it. Place it in a closed paper bag and label it
"shredded paper."
8. Trying to figure out which boxes from the kitchen can be recycled can be confusing.
A quick tip: if the product can be stored in the cupboard it's recyclable. If it goes
in the fridge, freezer or microwave it shouldn't be recycled.
9. A newspaper is recycled and back in circulation in less than four weeks. Don't
forget that you can recycle the inserts along with the newspaper!
10. Recycled cardboard is used to make new boxes, cereal boxes and other paper
packaging. It can even be used to make paper backing for shingles. It's a bit more
work to break boxes down and tie them in a bundle, but it's worth it.
Question of the Month
Q: Why doesn '( Shorewood have a curbside collection for Spring Clean-up?
A: For a number of years, the City offered curbside pick-up service with our
spring clean-up event. The cost of this collection was then divided among the
houses throughout the City and residents were charged this fee on their summer
quarterly water and sewer bill. Our state legislature has passed numerous bills on
how to dispose properly of many household items making it essential to rethink
the way we handle these items. The items that we could pick up as general rubbish
became fewer, thus there is very little that can be set out curbside. Most items
must be brought to our public works facility on the day designated for Spring
Clean-Up. The charge (if any) is determined by the cost charged by the vendors
the City uses for disposing of them properly. With the price of gas going up yet
again, the curbside pick-up service has become cost prohibitive to continue.
Residents are reminded that many items in the home are recyclable. For a
complete list of those items and the proper disposal methods and locations, go
to www.hennepin.us and enter keyword A to Z Guide.
