The Shorewood Spring Clean-Up and E-Waste drop -off is scheduled for Saturday, May .17, 8 AM-4 PM. This clean-up day will consist only of a drop off location-there will be no curbside pick-up and no yard waste disposal. Specific details inside! Shorewood Goes Prairie THIS MONTH, THE CITY OF SHOREWOOD will be converting two parcels of City-owned parkland from lawn to prairie. Joe Pazandak, Shorewood's building inspector, has worked on the development of his own prairie for several years. At the April 8 Park Commission meeting, he presented the prairie concept for several parcels in Shorewood to commissioners. The Park Commission and City Council agreed on converting two parcels: one location is at Freeman Park near the entrance on Eureka Road, and the other is along the north side of Hwy 7, west of the Skate Park. PLANTING PRAIRIE IN PLACE OF LAWN GRASSES HAS MANY ADVANTAGES, INCLUDING: . Reduced water run-off . More snow holding capacity . Reduced maintenance and cost after establishment . Deeper root structure to hold soil in place . Vegetation system that is more sustainable in difficult weather conditions . Different, more natural aesthetics . Reduced energy consumption due to less mowing and maintenance . Reduced irrigation . Reduce phosphorous . Reduce pollution, carbon sequestration . Reduced chemical applications . Reduced weeds Planting is expected to begin in mid- to late-May. Side Oats Grama and Little Bluestem are the two warm season grasses that have been selected for these sites. According to Bill Olson of Feder Prairie Seed Company in Blue Earth, Minnesota, during the first season, residents can expect to see grasses reach approximately 6-10" in height. The growing season will continue into September, when the grasses will begin to die back. The following spring, the grasses will initially be mowed to encourage further growth. Eventually the plants will reach 2-4' high. For additional information on prairie planting, go to www.mnnwgpa.org, or see the Feder Seed web site, wwwfederprairieseed.com. Enjoy a Safe Summer THE SOUTH LAKE MINNETONKA Police Department would like to offer some tips to help keep everyone's summer activities safe and enjoyable. Driving Do not drink and drive. Even if you've only had a drink or two and you feel fine, do not drive. Reflexes and judgment are altered after only a small amount of alcohol. Take turns being a designated driver. In 2005, there were 16,885 alcohol-related traffic fatalities in the U.S. Let's all work together to reduce that staggering number of unnecessary deaths! The SLMPD has, and will continue to, aggressively enforce impaired driving laws to keep our communities' streets safe for everyone. The four most effective ways you can contribute to reducing traffic crashes are to SLOW DOWN, BUCKLE UP, DRIVE SOBER, and PAY ATTENTION. Make sure your kids are riding safely. SLMPD Community Service Supervisor David Hohertz, 952.960.1619, is a certified child passenger safety technician and is available to assist you with questions or with properly installing your car seat. Visit www.bllcklellpkids.state.mn.lIs for further information. Bicycling Wear a helmet. For assistance with proper fit, simply stop by your favorite bike shop. Children should not be allowed to ride bikes after dark. Bicyclists are required to adhere to the same laws that pertain to motor vehicles, including riding on the right-hand side of the street and stopping at stop signs and red lights. Boating Visit the Hennepin County Sheriff's Water Patrol website at www.waterpatrol.org or phone them at 952.471.1300 for information on boating safety or watercraft laws and regulations. Kids Parents should know where their kids are, and who they are with, at all times. Kids need to adhere to the uniform Hennepin County Juvenile Curfew law, which can be viewed on-line at www.co.hennepin.mn.lIs.Click on "Ordinances" under the "Reference" section (bottom, right side of home page) and go to ordinance 16. Questions for the City This new column will answer questions often heard by the City Councilor City Staff. To submit a questionfor consideration in this column, please email question to jmoore@ci.shorewood.mn.us, or call City Hall, 952.474.3236, ext. 226. Q: How do I get a street light added to my street? A: If a neighborhood is interested in having a street light added, they must meet the following criteria: Location: The City does not install street lights for the purpose of deterring criminal activity, rather, it is for the purpose of safe vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Therefore, street lights will be placed only at intersections, the ends of cul-de-sacs, at sharp turns, and at steep grades. If you would like a street light installed and it meets the above listed criteria, it is recommend that you first get a petition of neighboring residents and then submit the petition and request to City Hall for review. The City pays monthly electric service for the street light if installed. Cost of installation varies. To discuss cost, please contact the Planning Department, 952.474.3236. 3 THE SHORE REPORT / MAY 2008 Council Activities Since the last newsletter the City Council: o Appointed Councilmember Wellens as Council liaison to the Park Commission for the months of April and September-December, 2008, and Councilmember Bailey for the months of May-August, 2008. o Appointed Missy Vilett to the Planning Commission for the term ending February 28, 2011. o Accepted the agreement with Springsted, Inc. for the City Administrator search. o Approved agency review of the draft Comprehensive Water Resource Management Plan. o Approved the Wetland Conservation Act Joint Powers Agreement with the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District. o Approved an amendment to the Waterford Planned Unit Development that would allow a restaurant-business to apply for a beer and wine license. o Held a work session to review the Comprehensive Plan roadway template, the goals and priorities timeline, and to discuss the scope of the City survey. o Received request for funding from the Lake Minnetonka Assoc. for milfoil treatment on Phelps Bay. o Held an open house to receive comments regarding the proposed City Hall building remodeling project.
