School District Elections Nov. 6
TilE CITY OF SHOREWOOD holds its City election in even years; therefore, there are no City offices on
the Election Ballot in 2007. Both the Minnetonka School District #276 and the Westonka School
District #277 will hold a General Election on November 6. For more school election information,
contact your local school district. Minnetonka district #276: 952/401-5000; Westonka district #277:
952/491-8007. Polling locations for school elections in years that no City election occurs are different.
To find your polling location, contact your school district, or go to wwwpollfinder.sos.mn.us.
Rental Housing License Due
THE CITY OF SHOREWOOD ADOPTED a rental housing code in 1993 that requires owners of all
rental housing within City limits to be licensed by the City. The licensing procedure includes an
application and inspection and was developed to correct and prevent housing conditions that may
adversely affect the health, safety and general welfare of Shorewood's rental population.
The rental housing license pertains to all rental dwelling units, including apartments, duplexes,
double bungalows, single family homes and accessory apartments within homes. Licenses must be
renewed every three years or upon change of ownership, whichever occurs first.
If you are a property owner and the City has your contact information, you should receive license
application or renewal information by mail. If you own rental property and do not receive information
by November 19, please contact the City Planning Department at 952/474-3236.
If you are a renter in the City of Shorewood, please make sure that your property has been
properly licensed. The license inspection protects renters and makes sure that properties meet code
requirements. If you are unsure about whether or not your property has been licensed, please call the
City of Shorewood at 952/474-3236.

DISTRICT (MCWD) and the City of Shorewood
celebrated the dedication of the Gideon Glen water
quality improvement and wetland restoration project.
Gideon Glen offers an interpretive trail, designed to
offer an educational experience for adults and children,
while using the beautiful resources of a stormwater
pond and restored wetland to clean up runoff pollution
from Highway 19. The site is located just north of the
intersection ofHwy 19 and Smithtown Road, directly
across the road from Tonka Village shopping center.
The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is the
regional governmental unit responsible for managing
and protecting the water resources of the Minnehaha
Creek watershed, which includes nearly all of
Shorewood. The complete District covers approximately
181 square miles that ultimately drain into Minnehaha
Creek, which then enters the Mississippi River. The
watershed includes natural treasures such as Minnehaha Creek, Lake Minnetonka, the
Minneapolis Chain of Lakes and Minnehaha Falls. There are eight major creeks, 129 lakes
and thousands of wetlands within the MCWD.
The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District protects and improves water quality, manages
stormwater, manages levels of Lake Minnetonka and flow of Minnehaha Creek, restores
and manages wetlands and lakes, and much more. For more information on MCWD, go to

Recycling 1 01 : Toss the Lids
PLASTIC RECYCLING IN SIIOREWOOD only includes plastic bottles at this time. Other plastics,
such as yogurt containers, margarine tubs and fast food containers are not recyclable
curbside. Some yogurt companies, such as Stoneyfield and Wallaby, will now take back their
own containers, but you must ship them. Check company web sites for more information.
When there is a choice, purchase products in containers that can be recycled curbside.
Always remove lids from plastic containers and put those in your garbage. The lids are
often from a different plastic material than the bottle and cannot be recycled at this time.
Removing them from the recycling stream eliminates possible contamination of the recyclable
materials. It is also a good idea to rinse bottles.
Residents are reminded that the first option is always to reduce the number of plastics
going into the recycling bin or waste stream. If you can, use a reusable water bottle rather
than buying bottled water, and look for other ways you can challenge your family to reduce
waste coming from your home.
Change A Light,
Change the VVorld!
HENNEPIN COUNTY RECENTLY won the National Association of
Counties' Change a Light, Change the World Employee Pledge
Campaign. Over 1,100 county employees went online and pledged
to replace an incandescent bulb for a compact fluorescent.
This simple switch prevents the release of 247 tons of greenhouse
gas emissions! County employees have taken this mission to heart
and made a commitment to do their part to save energy and help fight
global warming. Now county residents can take the same pledge.
Fill out the online pledge form and commit to making a change. For
the form, go to www.hennepin.us. and type in the keywords change
a light.
You can also learn more about Energy Star products. Every ENERGY STAR qualified
light bulb uses 75 percent less energy than a standard bulb, lasts up 10 times longer and
can save about $30 or more in energy costs - while preventing more than 450 pounds of
greenhouse gas emissions over its lifetime.
Now is a good time to make the switch. Many retailers are offering discounts on fluorescent
bulbs through the end of November. Check at your local hardware store or home center.
Compact fluorescent bulbs contain mercury and should not be placed in the trash. Regular
incandescent bulbs may be placed in the trash. For proper disposal information, visit the
A to Z How-to-Get-Rid-of-It Guide on the Hennepin County web site, www.hennepin.us.
