Southshore Center Celebrates 1 0 Years The Southshore Center's Top 1 0 Reasons to Celebrate the 10th Birthday of the Center on October 4th Number One: 9:30-10:15 AM, Mamie Hensel, an energetic motivational speaker, will speak about the attitudes of aging.. . are we becoming old? Or, are we becoming older? Do we choose how we age? Cost: $2. ~,~ ~ r:,~Jf11~_ J li,! ~ Number Two: 10:30-11: 15 AM, Faith Sullivan, local author and speaker, writes about women taking control of their own lives. Cape Ann and Gardenias are two of her recent books. Cost: $2. N umber Th ree: 11:45 AM-l PM, Birthday luncheon and speaker James V. Gambone, PhD. A special lunch will be served followed by James Gambone, a national speaker, writer and documentary film maker. Dr. Gambone will speak about Celebrating the Gifts of the Generations to the Community. His book, Refirement: A Guide to Mid Life and Beyond is recognized as a remarkable guide for those 50 and beyond. Cost for lunch and the speaker is $8. Number Four 1: 15-1 :45 PM, James Gambone available for additional questions and answers Number Five: 2-3 PM, Two popular painters will give painting demonstrations: Keith Wilcock of Keith Wilcock Galleries in Excelsior, will demonstrate painting with watercolors, and Michele Combs, an instructor at the Center, will demonstrate oil painting. Guests will be encouraged to ask questions and dialogue with the artists. Numbers Six, Seven & Eight: 5-7:30 PM, Annual Beer & Brats Supper for contributing members of the Friends. During the meal, artist Jim Hillis will do portraitures of dinner guests for $10. Following dinner, George Pillsbury will speak on History Around the Lake. All mayors from the South Shore are invited to inform League members and the public about local issues important to the residents they represent. Each participant will make a 1 O-minute presentation. Following the presentation by the mayors, the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions. THE SHORE REPORT / SEPTEMBER 2007 Household Electronics Waste Check Before You Throw! WASTE ELECTRONIC AND electrical products from households should be managed responsibly, even in small quantities. As of July 1, 2006, Minnesota residents cannot put televisions and computer monitors in the trash, according to state law. CRT-containing devices need to be recycled by businesses and households. Televisions and computer monitors are hazardous because they contain up to eight pounds of lead and can cause an environmental problem if discarded with regular garbage. The following recyclers will recycle household electronics. Some retail stores provide recycling services that are convenient for consumers whowant to get rid of various broken or unwanted electronics, particularly cell phone and rechargeable batteries. Through the RBRC's Ca1l2Recycle program, retailers including Batteries Plus, Target, and Radio Shack offer drop-offs for all brands of unwanted cell phones and accessories. Sprint Project Connect offers free drop-off of all brands of wireless phones at Sprint Stores and participating Easter Seals 2 locations nationwide. . Staples office supply stores offer free drop-off recycling services for used cell phones, PDAs, pagers, and rechargeable batteries. '. Through the Verizon Wireless HopeLine Phone Reycling Program, consumers get free drop-off recycling services for used cell phone at retail store locations. . Cell phones and batteries may also be brought to City Hall for recycling. Don't Trash Fluorescents WITH THE INCREASED popularity of compact fluorescent light bulbs comes the need to recycle old florescent bulbs. Many hardware stores take old bulbs, as do Hennepin County Recycling Centers. All types of light bulbs may be recyclable at IKEA in Bloomington. Mercury in the fluorescent bulbs makes bulbs hazardous in . a landfill or incinerator. R~ LlMItdv WAA-~ As THE KIDS RETURN to school, focus on working toward a waste-free lunch. Use a reusable bag and containers, cloth napkins, and drinks in reusable containers. Many area schools now compost organics from the lunchroom. Talk with your school about what materials can be com posted and educate children on what from their home lunch should be composted. Members of the Friends receive a monthly newsletter of the many activities, classes, health services, and other events at the Center. Friends also receive the satisfaction of supporting the quality programming provided at the Center for this City. Over the 10 years, the Southshore Center, has provided opportunities to the community, particularly to older adults. Discussed billboard regulations and the City Hall building at a work session. . Received a report on current activities from Lake Minnetonka Conservation District (LMCD) representative Tom Skramstad. . Awarded a contract for services for Sanitary Sewer Lift Station 12 rehabilitation, at the end of Christmas Lake Point Road. . Held a work session for the 2008 City general fund budget. Budget discussions will continue through the fall. . During a special meeting, Council discussed and decided to begin the process to sell the liquor store operations. . Authorized funds for pavement marking and asphalt pavement coating. . Approved the 2008 Excelsior Fire District budget; Mound Fire Department budget; and the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department budget. . Reviewed the cost estimates and options for the City Hall building. Council decided to proceed with making improvements to the existing building. . Reviewed the Amlee Road, Manitou Lane, Glen Road street reconstruction project feasibility report; Council will continue this discussion at a September 10 work seSSiOn. Deer Management The City Council will discuss a deer management plan, and consider the possibility of contracting with bowhunters who would remove deer from public lands within Shorewood during the bow season (beginning September 15).
