""hen the Dog Bites
THE SOUTH LAKE MINNETONKA Police Department (SLMPD) and Orono Animal Control would like
to remind residents that when a dog bites a person, a police report MUST be made. The animal
will then be quarantined for 10 days at a location determined by the animal control officer.
Be cautious around strange dogs. Always assume that a dog who doesn't know you may see you
as an intruder or a threat.
For additional information regarding animal regulations, refer to Shorewood City ordinance
chapter 700 via the City's web site, www.ci.shorewood.mn.us.Animal control services are currently
provided to the City of Shorewood under a contract with the Orono Police Department. The Orono
Animal Control Officer can be reached via the Hennepin County Sheriff's Dispatch Center at
763/525-6210.
National Night Out 2007
THE SOUTH LAKE MINNETONKA Police Department is proud
to be participating in the 24th Annual National Night Out
(NNO) campaign on Tuesday, August 7, 2007.
Although most Shorewood residents feel fairly safe from
criminal activity, crime does occur in this area. One of the best
ways to keep it from affecting you is to know your neighbors
and your South Lake police officers, even if just on a casual
basis. National Night Out provides an excellent opportunity
for neighbors and police to become better
acquainted. Along with the traditional display
of outdoor lights, neighborhoods celebrate NNO
with a variety of evening activities such as block
parties, cookouts, and visits from the police
department.
The South Lake Minnetonka Police
Department, which serves the communities of
Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood and Tonka
Bay, encourages you to organize a National
Night Out block party in your neighborhood.
South Lake officers are available to visit these
NNO activities to answer questions, provide you
with crime prevention tips, and get to know each
other. Please contact Community Service Crime
Prevention Officer David Hohertz at 952/474-
3261 for assistance organizing your event.

Freeman Park Plaza Garden
EACH YEAR, SEVERAL RESIDENTS and resident groups adopt gardens in local parks. They
work all spring preparing the garden beds and planting the garden of their design.
They then continue all summer taking care of the garden with weeding, watering and
other garden maintenance. The Freeman Park Plaza, located next to the Eddy Station
shelter in Freeman Park, has been beautified thanks to the hard work of some dedicated
youth in our community.
In 2006, Minnewashta Girl Scouts in
Troop 1721 (currently going into 5th
grade) planted and added the beginning
touches to the garden. This group started
the year adding to the garden. Girl Scout
Troop 2378 (currently going into 6th
grade) officially adopted the garden for
this season, working with master gardeners
to focus the plantings on the beautiful
memorial rock and plaque placed in the
plaza.
Both troops will be sharing the weekly
maintenance of the garden this summer. When you are at Freeman Park, take a moment
to enjoy the handiwork of our youth, and relax in the plaza of our beautiful park!
Are You A Noisy Neighbor?
BUSINESS OWNERS AND RESIDENTS of Shorewood are asked to think about how their
weekly chores might be affecting neighbors. City Hall continually gets complaints
from residents about early morning and late evening noise that infringes upon the peace
and quiet of a neighborhood.
Is the best time for you to mow your lawn 7 a.m.? Do you let your barking dog out at
6:30 AM or 11 PM? Do you enjoy socializing around the bonfire until midnight or later?
While all of these, and similar activities, seem harmless, they can disrupt others.
If7 a.m. is the only time you are able to mow your lawn, talk with neighbors. Once
you explain your predicament, most likely agreeing to a particular day of the week
that you will be mowing could solve the problem. It's highly likely neighbors were not
aware of your dilemma. Open communication can solve many misunderstandings.
Late night noise is similar. Be respectful. If you are going to be entertaining late,
mention to your neighbors that you will be having an event. They will then be aware
that this might be an evening they will choose to close their windows.
Even with open communication, be courteous. You might enjoy your late evening
outside, but if the neighbor is going to be up at 6 a.m. for work, the outside activity is
not going to be as enjoyable for them. Finally, be understanding if a neighbor calls and
asks you to please stop the dog from barking or to keep the noise down. We all need
a reminder and should not jump to the defensive when simply asked to be quiet.
We live in a beautiful residential community, and we should be able to enjoy the
surroundings without causing hardship for others. Take some time and think about your
affect on your neighborhood, and ask yourself what you can do to make it better.

Public VVorks Update
Battling Dogs, and an Occasional Killer Thorn Bush!
Each quarter, City utility personnel don bright colored vests and walk the
~eighborhood.s reading the water meters of those homes that have City water
servIce. The practice of reading meters can often times be a real adventure for crew
members! Meter readers have learned to carry dog treats, a few kibbles and bits and
maybe even a fetch toy to distract a dog long enough to access and read the meter.
The City has been fortunate to only have had a few instances where an animal has
bit a meter reader.
Mete~ re.aders must also deal with the occasional killer thorn bush to get to the
remote I~dIcator or touch pad. Some homeowners also feel that having a meter reader
enter their property may be an intrusion.
Those days are slowly coming to an end. The City is changing over a portion of the
system to an automated reading system. Utility personnel will be able to drive down
th~ roadway ~nd collect the meter readings by radio. The ability to obtain readings
wIthout entenng the property limits the inconvenience to property owners and keeps
operators safe from property hazards.
Northern ~at~r Works Supply has been contracted to change out approximately
half of the eXIstmg meters to the automated meters. The water fund will cover the
cost of the new meters so homeowners will not be charged for the new meter.
A second project (timeline yet to be determined) will complete the change out of the
remainder of the meters. A map of the areas currently under contract to be changed
may be found on the City web site, www.ci.shorewood.mn.us.
~he Ci.ty wi~l send ~ut a letter, via U.S. Mail, to homes in the first phase of the project.
ThIs notice will provIde contact information for the firm that will be completing the
meter ch~nge ~ver. Representatives will make contact with homeowners to arrange
~ conve~Ient ~Ime to enter the home and change out the meter. Other pertinent
mformatlOn wIll also be included.
This change should be beneficial for all: homeowners, utility personnel, pets, and
those prickly bushes the landscapers love!
Fireworks Safety
THE EXCELSIOR FIRE DISTRICT reminds residents of Minnesota
fireworks laws. A summary of the Minnesota fireworks laws
are: sales, possession and use of some non-explosive and non-aerial
consumer fireworks is permitted in Minnesota.
Fireworks MAY NOT be used on public property such as the
Commons, City-owned docks, beaches, parks, trails, bridges, parking
lots, schools, roads, alleys, and other government-owned properties.
This means that even sparklers should not be used on public roads
or in p~blic parks. Examples of legal fireworks include sparklers, cones, and tubes
~hat ~mIt ~parks, novelty items like snakes, and party poppers. If they don't sell the
Item m Minnesota, chances are it is illegal to have in the state of Minnesota.

Recycling
Refresher
Please remember that
only plastics with a
#1 or #2 and with a neck
(such as a ketchup bottle)
are recyclable in the
Shorewood curbside program. Many
yogurt containers, whipped topping
containers, fast food containers, etc. are
put curbside each week and contaminate
the recycling.
Also remember that corrugated
cardboard is easily recycled. You must
simply fold down the boxes into stacks no
larger than 3 ft. X 3 ft. Secure the bundle
with twine or packaging tape. Set it next
to your recycling bin.
If you have questions about exactly
what you should recycle curbside, please
contact City Hall, 952/474-3236, or see
the City web site.
