A workshop on green root design and installation
Tuesdqy, June 26,2007 qt 7 pm
South shore Center, 5735 Country club Roqd
Green rooftops use living plant material to improve building
performance and reduce environmental impacts.
Minnesota is home to more than 80
green roofs that add more than one
million square feet of green space to
our watersheds. As green roofs, like the
one on the Minneapolis Central Library,
gain visibility, homeowners are wonder-
ing how to implement green roofs in their
own backyards.
· REDUCE ROOF REPLACEMENT COST:
35-50 YEAR LIFESPAN.
· REDUCE STORMWATER MANAGEMENT
COSTS.
· IMPROVE AIR QUAILlTY.
Roof Bloom is a program designed for homeowners interested in install-
ing a green roof on a garage or other small outbuilding. This workshop
will give homeowners tools to understand how to get a green rooftop onto
almost any small building.

Your Water Impact
ALTHOUGH THERE ARE many households in Shorewood that are located right next to
a lake, stream, pond, or wetland area, even those homes that are not have a huge
impact on our water. All storm sewers and drainage ditches
in Shorewood eventually end up in one of the Shorewood
waterways.
It would be nice to have pristine, weed-free lawns, but we
must all think ofthe price the environment pays. Ifhomeowners
do not take the time to research the needs of their lawns, and
the proper application methods, the damage caused to local
waterways can take years to repair. Homeowners using lawn
service companies should talk with service providers to make
sure proper environmental precautions are being taken.

Soil Test
One thing that most homeowners do not consider because of the perceived time and
cost involved is a soil test. We use packaged lawn fertilizers on our lawns, regardless
oflawn needs. Many weeds thrive simply because they are given the right formulation
of nutrients. We then counteract with herbicides to battle the weeds. A simple and
inexpensive soil test can help you determine what your lawn needs, and in the end
can save you time and money! Soil test instructions are available from the University
of Minnesota Extension Service, www., and costs only $15 per test.
Other things you can do to keep our waterways clean include:
. Remove leaves and lawn debris from the street. NEVER blow leaves or grass
clippings into the street. Either compost your yard waste on site, or contact your
garbage hauler for compost options.
. If you live next to a storm drain, help take care of it. Keep debris picked up from
the drain area. This is especially important after a rain storm, when debris from the
entire street collects next to the drain.
. If you fertilize your lawn, or if you hire a lawn service, remember that phosphorus is
not permitted on existing lawns in Shorewood. Most Shorewood lawns have plenty
of phosphorus. If a soil test shows the need for phosphorus, you are permitted to
make an application. Follow directions carefully and make sure that any fertilizer
that leaches onto streets, driveways and sidewalks is swept back into the lawn to
prevent it from washing down the storm drains.
. PET OWNERS: Please pick up after your pet. Pet waste contains phosphorus and
other harmful bacteria, and should never be allowed to sit in the yard to become part
of the storm water system.
Homeowners should keep in mind, if they don't want it coming out of their faucet,
they should think about whether or not it should be on their lawn. Living Green 365, a
newsletter from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, recommends www./ivinglawn.
org, as one site for organic lawn care tips.
Anglers Get the Lead Out!
LEAD IS A TOXIC METAL that can have adverse effects on the nervous and reproductive
systems of mammals and birds. Lead is found in most fishing jigs and sinkers and
can poison wildlife. But there is another option. Anglers can use sinkers andjigs made
from non-poisonous materials such as tin, bismuth, steel, and tungsten-nickel alloy.
Anglers who bring in lead sinkers and jigs to a Hennepin County Drop-off Facility
can receive a sample of lead-free alternatives at no charge (while supplies last). The
facilities are located at 1400 W. 96th St., in Bloomington; and 8100 Jefferson Highway,
in Brooklyn Park. The lead-free tackle promotion is a part of a program sponsored by
the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Department of Natural Resources.
To learn more about lead-free alternatives, visit www.reduce.org/sinkers.
