Spring Clean-up Changes
No Curbside Pick-Up This Year
SPRING CLEAN-UP DAY IS SET FOR MAY 19! The biggest change this year is that there will be no
curbside pick-up service. Late last fall, Council discussed the cost effectiveness of curbside
pick-up service, and consensus was to discontinue this part of the spring clean-up program.
On Spring Clean-up Day, residents will still be able to bring items to the drop-off site located at
Shore wood Public Works. The following items will not be accepted: household hazardous waste,
building materials and yard waste.
See the insert for complete information!
SLMPD Seeking Volunteer
Reserve Officers
S ourn LAKE MINNETONKA POLICE reserve officers provide support services that include such duties
as riding with licensed officers on routine patrol, traffic and crowd control, crime prevention,
residential and business checks, bike patrol, security assignments, and emergency call-outs for
disasters and crisis situations. The SLMPD has a well-established Reserve Unit and is currently
seeking interested applicants who meet the following minimum qualifications:
. At least 19 years old
. Good physical condition
. Possess a valid Minnesota driver's license
. Have no felony or gross misdemeanor convictions
· Pass an oral examination
. Pass a background investigation
Reserve Unit members spend much of their time riding with licensed officers assisting them
with calls and traffic stops. The Reserve Unit holds monthly meetings at which current law
enforcement and department issues are discussed. Additionally, each meeting features a training
topic. Reserve officers are unpaid volunteers. Some are planning to enter the law enforcement
profession and are enhancing the pursuit of their career. Others are citizens with a variety of
backgrounds not related to law enforcement, who have a desire to give to their community.
For further information, contact David Hohertz of the SLMPD at 952/474-3261 or at dhohertz@
southlakepd.com. You may also visit the department's website at www.southlakepd.com and click
on "Reserve Unit".
Buckthorn Removal
SPRING IS HERE and we are starting to think of
.cleaning our gardens and yards. One major
invasive species many residents are helping rid
Shorewood of is Buckthorn. Buckthorn takes
over areas, eliminating all native species in its
way. It spreads very rapidly.
To aid residents in their buckthorn removal,
the City has two sizes of weed wrenches that
available for resident use. These tools will pull
smaller sized buckthorn out from the roots,
eliminating the need for chemicals and stump
grinders. You need to reserve the wrench with
a $20 deposit which is refunded once the wrench
is returned.

Rain Gardens:
An exciting new idea for
your home
RAIN GARDENS are a way we all
can help protect one of our most
important resources: water.
The health of our waterways depends
on clean water and places for animals to
hide and find food. When too much soil
or fertilizer gets into our rivers and lakes,
it first covers the bottom with a blanket
of sediment smothering insects and fish
eggs, destroying the home or habitat of
many animals. Next the rich source of
nutrients causes tremendous growth of
nuisance weeds. Finally, as the weeds
die, bacteria, feeding on the dead matter,
use up the oxygen in the water, which can
lead to fish kills.
Besides the pollution, another problem
for our rivers and lakes is the tremendous
volume of water that rushes off of our
roofs, roads, driveways and parking lots
during a rainstorm or spring thaw.
So what exactly is a rain garden?
A rain garden is simply a sunken garden,
typically 4-6 inches deep with a flat
bottom. While any size does some good,
they normally are about 1/3 of the size
of what is draining to it - usually a roof,
yard or driveway. Rain gardens can be
wild or formal looking depending on
the plants selected and the desires of the
home owner.

Green Roof
VJorkshop
EVER WONDER how you could
incorporate the popular green roof
concept into a building on your property?
Find out how easy and inexpenisve
a green roof is at a free workshop,
Tuesday, June 26, 7 PM, at the Southshore
Center. Complete information is on the
Shorewood web site, or watch for the
insert in the June Shore Report.
Shorewood is Phosphorus-Free
RESIDENTS ARE reminded that the City
of Shore wood and Hennepin County
restrict the use of fertilizers containing
phosphorus on their lawns. Because ofthe
number of restrictions on phosphorus use
over the past few years, phosphorus-free
fertilizers are becoming much easier to
find, but you still have to be aware of what
you buy, or what product commercial
services are putting on your lawn.
To check the phosphorus level of
fertilizer, look at the three numbers on
the front of the fertilizer bag. The middle
number should be zero-this indicates
the phosphorus content in the fertilizer.
Residents who contract for lawn service
should specifically request a phosphorus-
free fertilizer.
Most soil in our area contains plenty
of phosphorus naturally. If you feel that
your lawn needs additional phosphorus, a
nutrient that is necessary for plant growth,
you should first have your soil tested.
For $15 per soil sample, the University
of Minnesota Soil Testing Lab tests for
phosphorus, potassium and pH (the acidity
level of the soil). With this information,
you can custom feed your lawn! If the
results of this test show that you need
more phosphorus, get rates recommended
from the U ofM before applying the

fertilizer, so you do not use more than
needed.
