VVant to Preserve Your Land?
Consider Conservation Easement and Land Donation
THE CITY OF SHOREWOOD encourages and accepts donations of certain conservation easements
upon undeveloped lands in order to protect natural, scenic, open or wooded areas within the
City. This is a voluntary donation on the part of landowners. A conservation easement is a legal
agreement whereby landowners offer to limit development of all or some portion of their property.
With a land donation, property owners actually give land to the City with or without stipulations
(e.g.,access or use restrictions). In the past eight years, the City has received 3 donations ofland or
conservation easements, not including those acquired through the development process. Acceptance
of these gifts should meet the City's criteria for conservation open space. For more information on
making a conservation easement or land donation, contact City Hall at 952/474-3236.
Three Rivers Park Trail News
THREE RIVERS PARK District, which operates and maintains the LRT trail that runs through
Shorewood, recently presented the Shorewood City Council with upcoming changes and
improvements planned for the trail.
The first major change is the name of the LRT trail. Formerly known as the Southwest Corridor
LRT Regional Trail, the trail is now called the Lake Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail.
A system of signs and kiosks will be added to the entire Hennepin County trail system, including
the LRT trail. The kiosk in Shorewood will be located by the intersection of Eureka and Smithtown
Road and, along with other kiosks placed approximately ever two miles, will include a map of the
trial, highlights and points of interest along the trail, rules, and a blow-up aerial photo of a two-
mile by two-mile segment of the trail area showing other trail connections and locations of local
community services (e.g., restrooms, drinking fountains, restaurants).
At the trail heads, system kiosks will be installed. These kiosks will show the entire Hennepin
County trail system and connections.
Also to be included approximately every mile along the trail will be directional sign posts which
will indicate distance and will have arrows pointing to various connected locations along the
way.
Installation of the system is beginning immediately and will continue until completed.

Park
Vandalism
EVERY SEASON brings vandals to local
parks, but summer seems to be an
especially active time. From break-ins
to fires, the vandalism is more than just
petty mischief-it costs the tax payers
of our community in repair costs and
police services. As a community, we can
help thwart the efforts of vandals. Keep
an eye out for suspicious activities in
and around the parks, talk with children
about vandalism and encourage them to
report activities or vandalism that they
are aware of in the parks. Get the word
out by talking with neighbors and other
community members about watching for
suspicious activity. Report any suspicious
activity to the South Lake Minnetonka
Police Department at 9-1-1.

Bicycle and Motor Safety
WITH SUMMER IN full swing, many people are taking advantage of the beautiful
outdoor scenery the City of Shorewood has to offer. This means that there are
many bicycles and pedestrians sharing the roadways with motorists. To keep everyone
safe, please keep in mind the following safety tips:
Motorists should know that bicyclists may ride on all Minnesota roads, except where
restricted. When passing a bicyclist, motorists must at all times maintain a three-
foot clearance between their vehicle and the bicycle. Motorists and bicyclists must
yield the right-of-way to each other.
Bicyclists should be aware o/the/ollowing:
· Always ride on the right-hand side of the street, in the same direction as vehicle
traffic. Use bike lanes or bike routes whenever possible.
. Always ride single file on the street-side-by-side bike riding on the street is
dangerous for bicyclists and motorists.
. Use hand signals for turns and stops
When passing other bikers or people, always pass on the left,
and call out "On your left!" so they know you are passing.
Obey all traffic control signs and signals, including red lights
and stop signs, just as motorists do.
Always wear a properly fitting helmet. ~l( ,,:'

Bicycli.sts sho~ld a~ways keep In mInd that even If. they feel ?If
they are In the rIght, In a fight between a car and a bIcycle the '
bicycle almost always loses. Stay safe and be aware of traffic conditions around you.
When possible, use trails and backroads rather than heavily traveled highways, and
parents should always discuss the rules of the road with children, reminding them of
their boundaries.
Pedestrian Reminder
BECAUSE OF THE lack of sidewalks i~ much of Shore.wood.' pedestrians should
walk on the left side of the road facmg traffic. Walkmg wIth the flow of traffic
is one of the most common mistakes made by pedestrians and is a huge safety
concern! For other pedestrian safety tips, go to the Minnesota Safety Council web
site, www.mnsafetycouncil.org.
Area Burglaries Reported
SINCE THE JULY 4th holiday, the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department
(SLMPD) has received multiple reports of residential burglaries in
neighborhoods near Old Market Road. In all cases, doors had been left unlocked
and the burglars did not have to make forced entry. The message from the SLMPD
is clear: LOCK YOUR HOUSE AND GARAGE whether you are at home or
away. Front doors should be locked if you are outside in the back yard, and back
doors should be locked if you are outside in the front yard. South Lake officers
will be increasing patrol time in the area.
Please contact the SLMPD at 952/474-3261 if you have any information about
these crimes, or if you would like information about making your home less
vulnerable.

THE SHORE REPORT / AUGUST 2006
Spring
Clean-Up
THE CITY'S 2006 Annual Spring Clean-
up Day was held on Saturday, May
20. Over 82 tons of "junk", three (3)
tons of appliances, and one (1) ton of old
tires was collected and properly disposed
of! Included in this total, for example,
were 48 old TV's; 19 lawn mowers; 82
computers or monitors; 12 refrigerators;
29 propane tanks; and an old furnace!
The goal is to provide a convenient
way for residents to dispose of old
household junk in an ecologically and
environmentally friendly way. This
reduces the trash and appliances that may
be abandoned into ditches, parks, and
other visibly public locations.
Shorewood City Code 503.09 states
that the City will hold a spring clean-up
each year and will provide for curbside
pick-up. A drop-off site for large items
that cannot be collect curbside, such as
appliances, is also available. The City
code requires that the total costs of the
spring clean-up will be "apportioned
equally among the residential units
within the City and will be included in
the utility billing statement sent to each
residential account for the second quarter
of the year." In practice, the total costs
are reduced by any fee revenue received
from the drop-off site users, resulting in
net costs that are "apportioned among the
residences".
The charge this year to each household
for community clean-up was $18 per
residence. This charge is found on the
utility bill which was mailed out in early
July.
VVatch For
Students
PUBLIC SCHOOLS are scheduled to
begin the day after Labor Day,
Tuesday, September 5. Some private
schools will begin the week prior to
Labor Day. Drivers are reminded that the
number of children walking and riding
bikes during morning commuites will
likely increase. Please drive carefully
and give pedestrians the right-of-way!
