All registered candidates running for the office of mayor in the cities of Deephaven, Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood, and Tonka Bay have been invited to participate. The forum will offer South Lake Minnetonka area residents an opportunity to learn more about the nine mayoral candidates and how each candidate defines the challenges and opportunities facing his or her city. "Voters probably expect their candidates to campaign on issues specific to their own municipality. But many of the most critical decisions facing or cities in the next two years may require at least four, and in some instances, all five, city governments to work cooperatively. As yet unresolved issues such as the Joint Powers Agreement for the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department, and shared responsibilities for public works projects will likely be on the 2005 council agendas," Murrell said. Each candidate will be given equal time for opening and closing remarks. The moderator, Professor Steven Hoffman of the University of St. Thomas, will direct questions to each of the candidates. A question and answer session may be held in the final minutes of the forum. The Mayoral Candidates' Forum is open to the public. Consider the following: Traffic crashes kill 45,000 people every year in the United States. The two biggest culprits? Excessive speed and driver inattentiveness. Speed limits, as well as speed enforcement, exist for very valid reasons. Traffic engineers have carefully determined what speeds are safe for a particular street or highway. Exceeding that speed is very likely to put the average driver into a situation which cannot be resolved without experiencing a crash. The South Lake Minnetonka Police Department urges all drivers to follow the advice of Michael Campion, Minnesota's Commissioner of Public Safety: • SLOWDOWN • BUCKLE UP • DRIVE SOBER • PAYATTENTION If we all heeded these simple rules, the number of deaths and serious injuries on our roads could be greatly reduced.
