The Free Market is a listing service connecting free, reusable items with people who want them. It is part of an effort to reduce the amount of reusable goods being thrown away. In Hennepin County alone, it's estimated that 32 million pounds of usable clothing and household goods are thrown away each year — that's enough to fill shopping carts lined up from Minneapolis to Milwaukee. The Free Market web site allows residents to see what items people in their community are looking for or what items people have to give away, and how to reach them so they can make an exchange. Typical items on the Free Market include appliances, children's items, electronics, furniture, home decor, lawn and garden equipment, musical instruments, and exercise equipment. In 2003, The Free Market had over 8,000 listings and facilitated over 4,000 exchanges amounting to over 500 tons of materials. The Free Market web site is http://Www.twincitiesjreemarket.org. Shorewood will be the lead agency for the project. The project will take two construction seasons to complete, as the right -of -way acquisition process has taken longer than anticipated. The work done this year will primarily consist of underground utilities, retaining walls, and temporary lanes. At the end of the construction season, traffic signals — probably temporary ones — will be in place at the intersection. The bulk of pavement construction will occur in 2005. Attention has been given to the aesthetics of this area. Concrete retaining walls will have a stamped rock pattern with ornamental railing on top of them. Streetlighting will be decorative, and very similar to those in place along the Grays Bay bridge. Planting areas will be featured along the Shorewood side of the intersection itself.
