Crime Prevention Tip -Of- the -Month Child Safety W ITH THE 2001 -02 SCHOOL year just beginning, it is a good time to review how to keep children safe. Please take the time to review these suggestions and go over them with your children. • Make sure children know their full name, address (including city and state) and phone number (including area code). Be sure they know how to call "9 -1 -1" or "0" in emergencies. Practice making emergency calls with a make - believe or a disconnected phone. • Remind children never to talk to strangers or accept rides or gifts from strangers. Young children tend to think that strangers are ugly, scary people who wear black hats and lurk in the dark. Clarify that a stranger is anyone you don't know well and /or don't trust. Council on Cable City Council meetings are broadcast on Cable Channel 8 at: August 27 Meeting Tuesday, September 4 at 5:30 PM Friday, September 7 at 1:30 PM September 10 Meeting Tuesday, September 18 at 5:30 PM Friday, September 21 at 1:30 PM Take time to listen carefully to a child's fears and feelings about people or places that scare him and make him feel uneasy. Tell him to trust his instincts. Let the child know he can tell you anything, and that you'll be supportive. Encourage children to stay with friends rather than playing alone. Always know where your child is, what she is doing, and whom she is with. • Make sure children are taking the safest. routes to and from school, stores and friends' houses. Walk the routes together and point out places to go for help. Encourage children to tell an adult —you, a teacher, a neighbor, a police officer —about anything that doesn't seem quite right. • Remind children that no one —not even a teacher or close relative —has the right to touch them in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable, and that the right thing to do is say no, get away and tell an adult who will help them. Please feel free to contact Community Service Officer /Crime Prevention Specialist David Hohertz of the South Lake Minnetonka Police Department at (952) 474 -3261, X 113, with questions regarding crime prevention issues. THE. SHORE REPORT /SEPTEMBER 2001 2 UMMER EVAPORATES QUICKLY in Sep- tember. The early evening shadows that used to mark time are now replaced by early morning jangling alarm clocks, and that can only mean one thing: school is back in session. Education has always played a major role in the towns of the Lake Minnetonka area. One of the first priorities of the earliest white pioneers was the creation of a school district in 1855. Log cabins were the first school buildings. The most majestic of Excelsior's schools -- constructed in 1899- -still stands at 261 School Avenue. It's actually the third school building to be constructed on the site. The first was moved; the second was destroyed by fire. The building provided all grades for almost two decades. The lower floor contained the elementary grades, while the upper floor was home to what we'd call middle school and high school. The first year saw 30 students in the high school. By 1915 their numbers grew to the point that a new building for just them was constructed on Oak Street facing Galpin Lake. The last classes were held on School Avenue in 1964, but the building, once called "the finest school in rural Hen- nepin County," remains a graceful testimony to what early residents of our area considered of prime importance. by Steve Harris Wetland Assessment Underway T HE MINNEHAHA CREEK Watershed District will be conducting an assessment of wetlands within the City of Shorewood.
