The Shorewood City Council and Park Commission have worked with these groups and with neighboring Councils to respond to their request. Partnership The youth who have been involved in the project for the last three years have: ♦ Attended many evening meetings and demonstrated great patience over the lengthy and complex process. ♦ Respectfully made presentations to the Shorewood Park Commission and to various local City Councils. ♦ Researched park designs, built models and worked hand -in -hand with adults in the development of this project. A great civic lesson has been building and its important outcome awaits. Placement C oncurrent with the development of this vision has been the unfolding of a newly acquired parkland location within the City. The State of Minnesota has recently turned over ownership of the old Highway 7 wayside rest area (northwest of Old Market Road) to the City of Shorewood. While other sites were offered and considered, this one has many advantages: ♦ It is central to Shorewood and other local sponsoring cities. ♦ There is existing hard surface area to benefit the activity and provide for parking —and therefore a significant cost savings. ♦ The spot is highly visible and safe. Come and visit the site with Park Commissioners and City Councilmernbers on Saturday, May 6 from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. This visit will be,followed by a Community Open House on Vonday, May 8 from 5:30 i m. to 7:00 it w. at the Southshore Center 5735 Country Club Road. The Metropolitan Mosquito Control District (MMCD) is trying to keep it that way by checking and treating areas where mosquitoes develop. Shorewood residents are urged to take special steps during spring cleanup to remove or recycle containers in their yards that hold water after rainfall. Mosquitoes that develop in these containers can spread encephalitis. Besides controlling mosquitoes, MMCD offers tips to reduce your exposure to mosquitoes around your home: => Remove water - holding containers around your yard and clean out rain gutters to allow proper drainage. => Keep your lawn mowed and hedges trimmed. This will give mosquitoes fewer places to hide during the day. => Wear white or light colored clothes and avoid colognes, hair sprays and perfumed laundry products for your cloth- ing. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors and fragranced items. =* Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. Keep this in mind as you plan your activities. => Use mosquito repellent when necessary, but follow label directions carefully. If high numbers of mosquitoes threaten to spoil your summer fun, MMCD may be able to help. For more information call the MMCD 651 -645 -9149, or visit www.mmcd.org. Shorewood Council Agrees to Joint Powers Agreement A T THEIR APRIL 10 MEETING, the Shorewood City Council adopted a resolution authorizing the Mayor and Acting Administrator to execute the Ex- celsior Fire District Joint Powers Agree- ment. The four other member Cities (Ex- celsior, Tonka Bay, Deepbaven and Greenwood), have acted similarly or are close to accepting the agreement. Consensus on the final document by all five City Councils will allow for the creation of the Excelsior Fire District Board. The ultimate gain in restructur- ing the arrangement for fire and emer- gency services is to anticipate and pre- pare for the future safety and fire protec- tion needs of the community. As the pro- cess continues, we will report on its vari- ous stages and outcomes. THE SHORE REPORT/ MAY 2000 2 Trail (arid Park) Falk Smithtown Saturday I N THE APRIL. Dudley Kendrick The first Mayor of the Village of Shorewood W HEN THE KENDRICK'S first moved here (1930) a lot of houses —older farm houses —were rundown. Theirs was one of them. It had no electricity and no water, except a cistern. Like many of the others, they had an outhouse. All around the lake it was common to have outhouses. The advent of the sewer system came along in the 1940's and into the `50's. Mr. Kendrick commented that it's perhaps unfortunate that the Village of Shorewood didn't consider putting water in at the same time as the sewer system. There were lots of kerosene lamps. People who had gas in their house had to use tank gas from the gas company. There were also a lot of oil burning furnaces. For the coal burning furnaces, Lyman Lumber and Hennessy Lumber, the two lumber companies in Excelsior, brought coal in the trucks and unloaded it at the various houses that needed coal. It was not too satisfactory a situation, but people were able to be comfortable. More about life out in the country "in those days" next month! Be Clearly ,addressed NOW THAT PEOPLE ARE ALL OUTSIDE AGAIN, it's good to take a look at your own home and yard from the perspec- tive of the street to see how the rest of the world views your property. It's very important to notice if your address num- bers are visible and legible from the street, in daylight and in darkness. Be- sides helping your guests find you more easily, the emergency services (fire, medical & police) can respond to urgent situations more quickly. X . SHOREWOOD RESIDENTS WHO RE SERVICED BY CITY WATER will soon receive their "self- read" meter reading cards. This is a yearly procedure to verify that the outside meter is func- tioning properly and that quarterly read- ings are keeping pace with actual water usage. Some tips on what to look for: • The inside meter is located at the point where the water service line enters the home. This is usually in the furnace or utility room; but can be located in clos- ets, under stairways, or in cupboards. The reading itself is like an odometer on a car. Please include all permanent zeros printed on the face plate. • The outside remote meter is a small (less than 5 inches square) plastic fix- ture located on an exterior wall. This reading is also like an odometer. Look straight at the reading and please in- clude all permanent zeros located to the right of the numerical wheels on the face plate. • While reading the outside meter, please take note of the surroundings. Inter- fering bushes, trees, plants, dog access areas, etc. should be cleared to facili- tate regular meter reader accessibility. Cards must be completed and returned to City Hall by May 20 to avoid a $5 late fee. Southshore Center May Events b. It is important to note that there will not be a Goodwill Industries collection trailor at the Public Works facility. Other ideas for "recycling" usable items are shown below. Remember that pick -up hours are changed from what they have been in past years. C urbside i Service Begins At 7:00 A.M. HE CURBSIDE PICKUP will be conducted beginning on Saturday, May 20, 2000 at 7:00 A.M. Items to be disposed of must be curbside by that time. It may take more than one day to service the entire City, so please leave items out through Sunday evening if they are not picked up on Saturday. Our contractor for the pickup service will have just one person working per truck. Therefore, it is very important that only items small enough to be handled by one person are placed curbside. The action - packed line -up of special summer and fall events: Art on the Lake... Fourth of July... Crazy Days... Farmer's Market ... Apple Day... Christmas/Holiday Happenings. But have you ever wondered WHO sponsors these events... and WHY? O is us...the Excelsior Area Chamber of Commerce. We're a 163 - V V member business organization consisting of retailers, business profes- sionals, non - profit organizations and community- minded individuals in Excelsior, Tonka Bay, Greenwood and Shorewood! W ]Y? The Chamber's mission is to promote and support an environment V V in which businesses can thrive. These special events contribute to our mission in two ways: first, they draw visitors –from all over the Twin Cities – into our community. Presumably, these visitors buy goods and services and patronize our restaurants. Second, the events help showcase our community to potential business investors and new residents. In the case of Art on the Lake, art aficionados from all corners of Minnesota and parts of Iowa and Wisconsin make it a point to attend this premiere art show. The Firecracker Run, now in its 24th year, is the state's largest Fourth of July lOK race and attracts nearly 1,200 participants! Apple Day's fans mark their September cal- endars months in advance so they won't miss this harvest celebration. S pecial events accomplish something else. Four years ago, my family moved to Shorewood from Delafield, Wisconsin. It was December 18th. Our two boys were young and most unhappy about having left behind childhood friends and memories. No place could ever be as good as "our old home." The second evening here, we happened to drive through downtown Excelsior. Every tree, lamppost, storefront and home was dressed in its finest holiday col- ors and decor. We felt welcomed, embraced and charmed. We knew that night As the we had found a great place to call home. Now that the Excelsior area has a website (wwwExcelsioronline.com), we field inquiries from the all over the U.S., parts of Europe and Japan! Only a few weeks ago, a California man called our Chamber to inquire about hotel space for the next Wayzata "Chili Open." He'd seen it featured on CBS Sunday Morning. Even though he'd reached the wrong chamber of commerce, he chose to visit our end of the lake because of information provided on our website. S PECIAL EVENTS are only part of the Chamber's function. As the "voice of business" our job is to stay in touch with legislators on issues that affect both members and area residents. In 2000, you'll see our increased involve- ment in legislative issues ranging from downtown zoning and economic devel- opment to property taxes and civil justice reform. We'll strive to stay better tuned to changes, concerns and trends that impact the South Lake Minnetonka area. In the meantime, we invite you, the Shorewood residents, to participate in and enjoy the fun family- centered events of the Excelsior area. Hope to see you all at these exciting Chamber events in 2000 and beyond! Keep reading... Timing is everything! In the late 1800's, the Fourth of July celebration was marked by sailboat races, shell races, gun club competitions, baseball games, a swimming match for dogs and an afternoon band concert. We're not certain about the specific events on July 4, 1900 ... but people won't soon forget the celebration on July 4th 2000! Planning for this all -day event actually began 12 months ago. That's when the Chamber invited the Minnesota Orchestra to perform a concert as a prelude to the fireworks. "We didn't really expect the Orchestra to be available, but they were," said Terry Roeser, Fourth of July chairper- son for 1999 and 2000. Roeser said the idea of bringing such first class entertainment to Excelsior was inspired by the millennium cele- brations. (July may be the most "politically cor- rect" time to usher in the new mil - lennium... halfway between 2000 and 2001.) The internationally renowned orchestra will per- form in their own transportable bandshell that includes sound, lights and elevated stage. Associate Conductor Guincarlo Guerrero will conduct the 75- member orchestra in a spirited set of patriotic tunes and pop classics. Spectacular fireworks in Excelsior Bay will follow the concert. What does a celebration like this cost? All of the events* —from the Kids' Parade, Sand Castle Building Contest, Kids' Fishing Contest and the other entertainment —are free to the public. Of course, there are quite a few other costs related to entertaining a crowd that generally tops 27,000 people (on land). The cities of Excelsior, Greenwood, Shorewood and Tonka Bay have been generous in helping to offset the public safety expenses. In addition to the generous help from the cities of Shorewood, Excelsior, Greenwood and Tonka Bay, we have wonderful cor- porate sponsors (see list below) without whom we would not be able to present the Minnesota Orchestra. Look for these companies at the Boat Show, Firecracker Run Race and the Fourth of July events.
