Appointments Made to Commissions and Committees A T THEIR FEBRUARY 28 MEETING, THE CITY COUNCIL made the following appointments to these Commissions and Committees: Planning Commission —Neil Anderson, Tim Boehm, Kirk Rosenberger Park Commission —Pat Arnst, Kate Lynch Bix, Howard Young Lake Minnetonka Conservation District —Tom Skramstad Lake Minnetonka Communications Commission —Jeff Foust Land Conservation & Environment Committee —Joel Jurgens, Anthony Pini The names which are shown in regular text are those who have been reappointed to the same position. The appointees who are new to their roles are indicated in bold - italics and are briefly introduced below: Tom Skramstad is a familiar name as a former Planning Commissioner. A longtime resident of Shorewood, Tom has a concern for lake issues and is glad for the opportunity to serve on the LMCD. Tim Boehm and his family moved to Shorewood about one year ago, and are appreciating Shorewood's parks and the Lake area. In his position with Keane, Inc., Tim employs skills in problem - solving and decision - making, which will apply well to his role as a Planning Commissioner. Kirk Rosenberger is experienced as a Planning Commissioner and has come back for more. He and his wife, Mary Bensman have both been involved on City commis- sions and committees over the years. Howard Young is retired from teaching within the Minnetonka School District. He and his wife are fairly new as Shorewood residents, and Howard is interested in offering some of his time to the benefit of Shorewood Parks. Kate Lynch Bix applied to serve on the Park Commission because of her interest in Shorewood Parks since her family's move to Shorewood in 1992. One topic which has her attention is the use of gardens within City Parks. Anthony Pini and his family have also lived in Shorewood since 1992. Anthony's experience as a Civil Engineer, along with his respect for the natural environment prompted him to apply to serve on the LCEC. We welcome these new Shorewood commissioners, committee members and representatives and thank all who serve, for their time and commitment. THE SNORE REPORT / APRIL 2000 2 Early Shorewood Community Everts Recycling News More About Transportation "In Those Days" as told by Mr. W. Dudley Kendrick OADS, OF COURSE WERE RELATIVELY POOR. There were some dirt and some tar roads. What is now known as County Road 19 and over into Tonka Bay was pretty well tarred, as was Yellowstone Trail, which, Mr. Kendrick explained, was originally part of the road system going west to Dakota and Montana. The original bus line came out from Minneapolis to 44th and France and west through Hopkins where there was an im- portant railroad assembly yard. The streetcar went on a trestle that spanned over at least 6 railroad tracks so they could go back and forth. At crossings where there was no trestle or bridge, a streetcar conductor had to get out and go across to wave the motorman that it was safe to cross. As Mr. Kendrick says, one can hardly imagine that today. He continued to describe how the streetcar line came through Hopkins out around the present area of Glen Lake. (There once was a bridge by what is now Purgatory Park). It went around Scenic Heights near where the present library is and right by the current high school. A lot of what is now Highway 7 was at one time the streetcar tracks. Motor ve- hicles traveled along old Excelsior Bou- levard, which paralleled Highway 7 (the way it is today). Used Household Batteries — Handle With Care HE BEST WAY FOR CONSUMERS to keep harmful battery metals out of the environment is to use fewer batter- ies— choose battery-free toys and ap- pliances whenever possible. When you need alkaline batteries, choose those with low levels of mercury. Recharge- able nickel- cadmium batteries are also a good choice because they can be used many times before they must be dis- posed of through a collection program. When storing "dead" batteries and appliances, keep them in vented, non- metal containers, out of reach of chil- dren and pets. A cardboard box storec': on a high shelf may serve the purpose Place electrical tape on both ends of the battery to prevent the terminals from touching each other. Hennepin County operates a house- hold battery collection program to pro- vide residents with a convenient way to dispose of their used batteries. There are many drop -off sites located through- out Hennepin County, including the City Hall of Shorewood and the Excel- sior Library.
