TnaSHOar Raroarl Jav(APY2G'09 C& jel ALTHWGH RECYCLING IS VERY important, reducing the amount of waste you generate should be the initial focus of your efforts. When you avoid making garbage in the first place, you don't have to worry about disposing of waste or recycling it later. Changing your habits is the key - think about ways you can reduce your waste when you shop, work and play. There's a ton of ways for you to reduce waste, save yourself some time and money, and be good to the Earth at the same time. Stop the Junk Mail For information on how to get off ofmany credit card, catalog, and othermailing lists, go to www.reduce.org, and click on junk mail. Unfortunately it does take a bit of effort, but you can get your junk mail reduced considerably! Nationally, only 22% of all junk mail is recycled. That leaves 32 pounds of junk mail per person in your household going to the landfill. Reducing the amount in your mail box is a great first step! Reduce packaging waste Packaging makes up 30 percent of municipal solid waste. You can reduce the amount of packaging youthrow in the garbage by purchasing items that have less packaging. Examples: Reduce the amount of packaging by purchasing concentrates and diluting them with waterinreusable containers. Avoid single-serving products in favor of larger servings orbuying in bulk. Take your own reusable cloth bag so you don't need "paper or plastic." For more ideas on how to reduce household waste, go to www.reduce.org. Ci ..a`] . e4 i] Digital Television (DTV) Transition What You Need to Know ON FEBRUARY 17,2009, all full-power broadcast television stations are required to stop broadcasting in analog and broadcast in digital only. This is known as the digital television (DTV) transition. If you have a new television with a digital tuner, or subscribeto apay service such as cable or satellite, you can already receive digital broadcasts; however, if you watch television using "rabbit ears" or a rooftop antenna, you must take one of the following actions to receive digital broadcasts: • Connect your television to adigital-to- analog converterbox. • Subscribe to a pay television service such as cable or satellite. • Buy a digital television. If you purchase a new television, be sure to recycle your old one! Most TVs and computers contain a cathode ray tube (CRT), which contains two to eight pounds of lead. It is illegal to place electronic products containing a CRT in the garbage. Recycling options for televisions and other household electronics available to residents in the Twin Cities metro-area include: • Hennepin County takes electronics free of charge from households at drop-off facilitiesin Brooklyn Park and Bloomington. Quantity limits apply. • Take-backprogram: Somemanufacturers and retailers will take back your old electronics forrecychng. • Recycling companies: You can drop- off or arrange for pick-up of your old electronics at arecycler. For more information on Hennepin County's drop-off facilities and how to recycle electronics, call 612.348.3777 or visit henmpin uslelectmmcs. To find additional electronics recycling options, visit RethinkRecychng.com (formerly GreenGuardian.com), your go-to-guide for waste and recycling in the Twin Cities.
