Emerald Ash Borer
yob. Big Threat Little Package
EHERALD ASH BORER (EAB is an ash tree-destroying insect that is now in the Twin Cities. This
ti invasive species was accidentally broughtto the United States fromAsiain the 1990s.Although
it can fly short distances on its own, much of its spread is due to humans transporting it as larvae
burrowed under the bark of firewood orlandscape trees.
u In North America, EAB onlykills ash trees. The metallic-green adultbeetles are ahalfinch long
l^ml , and are active from Mayto September. Signs of EAB infestation include one-eighth inch, D-shaped
exit holes in ash tree bark and serpentine tunnels packed with sawdust under the bark. While EAB
spreads slowly on its own, it can hitch arideto new areas when people transport firewood or other
r y wood products infested with thelarvae. Officials urge Minnesotans to take steps to keep EAB from
1 z spreading:
• Don't transport firewood, even within Minnesota
THE _11~ Don't bring firewood along on a camping trip.
Buy the wood you need locally from an approved Meetings and
vendor. Don't bring extra wood home with you.

in the parks and make sure you separate your bottles and
cans from your trash.
Recycling in Shorewood
T HB CITY OF SHOREWOOD Has received many telephone calls and emails from
residents interestedin a single-sort recycling system. The currentrecycling contract
continues through December, 2009, but one consideration for 2010 is an option of a
single-sort recycling system with "carte' similar to your garbage cart. Factors which
will be discussedincludevino pays forthe containers, andwhatis the price difference
forresidents using a single-sort vs. dual-sort recycling system.
To share your opinion on newrecycling options, you may take an online recycling
survey. Go to the city web site, ioxno.ca.shomooodmnus, and click on the surveylink
to share your opinion. The survey will be open for comment through June 30, 2009.
