MANITOU PARK As the Commission neared the ice rink, Brown pointed out that the City receives many comments about the smoother ice at Manitou. He explained that the smoother ice is typically due to the fact that the trees near the rink shade it from the sun, which melts and • releases gases which ruin the ice. 1 PARK COMMISSION MINUTES TUESDAY, MAY 8, 2007 PAGE 2 OF 4 The Commission suggested they consider planting quick growing trees, such as poplars, • near the Badger ice rink. 3. There were 88 surveys mailed to the neighbors of Silverwood Park and 19 surveys were returned. For Manor Park there were 63 surveys mailed and 15 surveys were retuned. • Attached you will find the surveys and results for your review. • MANOR PARK SURVEY RESULTS APRIL 2007 What activities do you or a member of your household take part in when visiting the Manor Park? 13 Playground Equipment 7 Volleyball Court 15 Ice Skating 10 Picnic Pavilion/ Warming House 5 Baseball Field 10 Tennis Court What additions or improvements would you Iike to see at Manor Park? 12 Pond 1 Tennis Courts 3 Playground Equipment 3 Warming House / Picnic Pavilion 2 Summer Programming 8 Other — • Basketball Hoop • Hockey • Hockey • Add'1 tennis court, backboard for existing tennis court. NEW sign for tennis court (current one is old and faded). • 3 wall racquet ball court • Basketball Hoop • Build a soft path around the park for walking, biking, skiing. 9 Baseball Field Improvement • New / more playground equipment. Longer skating hours (warming house), tennis court backboard • Park up keep with respect to geese. Would like to see a basketball hoop /court as well as maintenance of the hockey pond (ie: snow removal, boards ?) Are there any recreational opportunities you would like to see at Manor Park? • Children / toddler groups (play groups) painting, etc. • Put rink lights on a time schedule with warming house — they are usually on all night. • Like to see boards up for hockey. • o No. It's a small community park. Great for passive recreation, i.e. croquet, horse shoe, bocce ball, frizzbe, etc. It would be nice if a high school student would want to give tennis lessons during the summer. I don't know if this would be allowed? Basketball court Basketball Hoop What other parks in Shorewood or surrounding communities do you frequent? Please share your reasons. • None actually — Manor Park meets our needs. • Deephaven Park in Cottagewood to play hockey on ice that has the boards. • No other parks. • Silverwood for the slide, Thorpe close to friends. Used to go to Freeman for soccer and Manor of course. • Thorpe Park, The Commons, Burton Park. • Soccer Practice at Freeman Park, Cottagewood Park • Staring Park in EP • Regional biking / running trail Comments: • Live on Suburban Drive — love the area — Husband helped with the "new" playground years ago. One thing we have always said that the pond could use an aerator or fountain with lights. It always gets so scummy, and with the pond being the first thing you see in the neighborhood when you come in a fountain with lights would be nice. . 0 • Let the natural tall grass around the pond grow up to protect wild life and enhance natural filtration of run off. Mowing crew needs to be instructed. • The pond has gone from poor to terrible in less than 3 years. By mid -June it's chocked with weeds and algae, and the new housing development does not help. Know that there has been discussion with City Council about the issue. What needs to be done is aeration to keep it from stinking so bad. • Thank you for fixing the large cracks in the tennis courts as well as fixing the fence around the tennis court. It is much appreciated. • The city pushed dirt into the pond in the mid -70's and silt from the new parking lot is flowing directly into the pond. City should fix its mistakes and clean out the pond. Why can't we have an area around the pond left in a natural state? • Would like the ice in the winter to be smoother... remove weeds? Flood with water truck — Also have two areas to skate — hockey and recreational skating. • The changes and additions to the garden are pretty and the plantings along Manor Rd are nice addition too. Can the pond be cleaned up? • The pond is a wonderful aesthetic that has not been appreciated in the sense of keeping it clean and protected. Too much algae, etc. and the swath of natural grasses etc. that grow around it should not have been cut. Let it come back! At least six feet deep and add native plants to enhance it. Also, trees should be planted in the park. There is too much grass — not enough change. We are • mowing much too often, using too much energy. The park is very hot, trees are like air conditioners, they lower the temp, absorb storm water, remove carbon dioxide, make a place more beautiful and inviting. Thorpe Park is a wonderful example of taking a "bare field" and making it into a lovely, shaded haven for spending leisure time. Most of the neighbors like the fact that Manor is low key. We would not want all the extra traffic that organized sports brings with it. • We live right next to it and use everything. Pond — a fountain or something to help keep it clear and free of lily pads. Tennis Court — a board on one end on the courts to hit against. Playground equipment — possibly paint. If there is something that can be done about the geese that would be great! Their droppings cover the ground and there are many times that kids don't want to play on the fields because of all the droppings. The park is great! My first concern would be the pond and keeping it clear of algae and lily pads. • Need safer way to ride to the bike / running trail. Sidewalks or bike lanes leading to trail — roads are dangerous. • My son and I visit the park every weekend. There is opportunity for improvements, but overall very satisfied. • The pond is filthy and putrid. We have been here 29 yrs and it is disgusting. Please call LAKE MANAGEMENT INC. at 651.433.3283 talk to Beth. They do a marvelous job of restoring ponds. Have been in business for 40 yrs. • The pond is a mess. Last 3 years it has become more polluted, the wildlife that we used to see is gone. Many neighbors see koi living in the waters. By the end of summer it is a fetid, smelly, algae- laden, oxygen - starved mess. Pond needs better management. Perimeter of pond is being overtaken by buckthorn. Please remove the buckthorn. We have spent a great deal of time and energy eradicating buckthorn from our property. The persons involved is mowing must be trained not to mow close to the pond. The riparian area bordering the water must be allowed to grow in order to keep out geese, provide nesting area, and aid the water quality of the pond. Please erect a sign banning idling motors in the parking lot. Frequently, garbage trucks, busses, and construction vehicles use the parking lot for breaks or the rest room. During those times when these people do not turn off their engines, the noise level and diesel smell in our home becomes very irritating. Additionally, please inform those involved in construction projects (Water's Edge in particular) not to stage materials in the parking lot. We really enjoy having the park across the street. It's great to see so much activity with sports teams, winter skating and general usage. For the most part, Manor Park is well managed. From: Frank Verderame [f.verderame @mchsi.com] Sent: Saturday, May 19, 2007 8:43 AM To: Twila Grout Subject: Manor Park To whom it may concern: I live directly across from the pond at Manor Park, address 20635 Manor Rd. My wife has already faxed her comments to you, but I have some concerns as well. 1. The pond is a mess. In the last 3 years it has become more polluted, and the wildlife we used to see is gone. Many of our neighbors have seen koi living in the waters.By the end of summer it is a fetid, smelly, algae - laden, oxygen - starved mess. The pond needs to be managed better. 2. The perimeter of the pond is being overtaken by buckthorn. We have spent a great deal of time and energy eradicating buckthorn from our property. Please remove the buckthorn. 3. The persons involved in mowing the grass must be trained not to mow close to the pond. The riparian area bordering the water must be allowed to grow in order to keep out geese, provide nesting area, and aid the water quality of the pond. 4. Its great to see so much activity with sports teams, winter skating and general usage. For the most part, Manor Park is managed well. Keep the park looking nice. More picnic tables. • Some present playground equipment is in bad shape and needs to be replaced. • Lights for ice skating. • Having neighborhood bands play during neighborhood picnic. • Ice skating next year would be great! Kids are getting older in the area and would use it. Also, a small platform off the water for the kids to watch the ducks, geese and fish. A bigger kid play area with taller slides — updated landing area — no more pebbles would be good — rubber? • Tennis courts — full size for neighborhood use 1 -2. • No, I like it the way it is. • Rock Wall, Baseball diamond • Plastic slide is in dire need of fixing. The board attached to the entrance attracts curious kids. Sees kids climb over the top frequently. • Love the `big' slides! However, on occasion my kids get gashes on their hands from the side of the slide while they're holding on. Something to look at? • Love the vintage swings — keep'em! • Fix playground equipment (the slide) What other parks in Shorewood or surrounding communities do you frequent? Please share your reasons. • Minnetonka Regional — many play structures and rubber play surface so it doesn't get mushy or muddy in the spring. • Excelsior Park • Round Lake in Eden Prairie — it has all the facilities such as tennis, walking trail and playground equipment. Playground in Excelsior as it has more variety of equipment for children. • Clear Spring School and one south of Covington east of Vine Hill, North Lotus Park, Purgatory Creek. • Can't remember name of park — off of Covington/ Vine Hill Rd to play tennis. • Excelsior Commons. • Curry Farms Park, nice equipment. • Deephaven Elementary for the playground equipment. • We've been to all Mtka. Parks with various playgroups. • Lake Ann and Lake Susan Parks in Chanhassen — they are wonderful and have been recently updated with new equipment and new rubber surfaces (much nicer and safer than wood chips. Also, less messy). • Thorp Park, Cottagewood park and Deephaven Elementary. • Deephaven and Excelsior beaches Comments: • Pease fix the slide. It has been broken for 2 years and is long overdue for replacement! We use this park a lot and my children like this park since it is close to home. Since it is not a large park, any piece not in working order detracts greatly from the park. I do not want to go through another season with this broken playground. • Fix the slide. • It is really sad that the playground equipment has sat un- repaired for what seems like two years. • Nice little park with a great sliding hill! • Please keep equipment up -to -date and fixed. Slide broken for a long time. • Greatly disappointed that the playground slide has been broken for well over a year. My 5 year old was injured on the slide two days ago. It is dangerous and needs to be repaired ASAP. Consider new updated playground equipment or in the least repair the slide immediately! • We go to Silverwood Park weekly! The kids love going to the park. The kids also really enjoy the big silver slides — they catch tadpoles in the marsh. • Could use a trash receptacle with a cover. • We love our park! Any improvements would be greatly appreciated! All things listed below are things I thought about over the last few years - - Shelter with seating, with a few permanent picnic tables under (would be nice for planned outings like National Night Outl ) - Lights on path leading from Covington to pond. (would it discourae or encourage `more' mischief?) - A more aesthetic opening leading to pond? - More garbage cans and add recycling (smoking can ? ?) - A curb, giant boulders or some sort of distinction from road to sidewalk on Covington leading to SweetwaterNine Ridge intersection. There is NOTHING stopping a vehicle from plowing over pedestrians while walking to park. - More native grasses and plants throughout. - A native wildflower /grasses /plants `field' placed in south side of grass area to attract butterflies and other little creatures. - Park entrance sign fine, however, the plants and foliage that encompasses it is very tired looking. - A different surface under swings and play -set area. - Space between practice wall and retaining wall is a bit of a safety hazard. One of the main slides has been broken for nearly two years. This has made the park unsafe and it also looks trashy, which is unfortunate in such a nice area. Because of this, we have been playing at other parks. • Thanks so much for keeping the skating rink cleared off. • Fix playground equipment. Add some trash cans and picnic tables. • Broken slide for 2 years — very dangerous. • • SILVERWOOD PARK SURVEY The Shorewood Park Commission is examining park priorities and is interested in hearing what you like about Silverwood Park as well as additions or improvements you would like to see. This has made the park unsafe and it also looks trashy, which is unfortunate in such a nice area. Because of this, we have been playing at other_ parks. I appreciate the survey and have hopes that Silverwood Park can be repaired and perhaps "upgraded ". Our family often goes to Lake Ann. and Lake Susan parks in Chanhassen. They are wonderful and have been .recently updated with new equipment and new rubber surfaces (much nicer and safer than wood chips. Also less messy.). During the winter we go to Silverwood Park for the sliding hill and to ice skate on the pond. The additions and improvements that we would like to see are 1)update.d and improved playground equipment and surfaces. 2)a pay..l.ion witl picnic tables )my husband would like to see a tennis court /s. There are so many family neighborhoods surrounding this park it seems like it would be worth while to keep Silverwood Park updated. It is frequently used by those living around it, and others "visiting ". I hope that this has been helpf feedback. Thank you for your time. Julie Belisle Do You Yahoo!? Tired of Spam? Yahoo! We use the park for all reasons listed on the survey. We are a family of 6 and frequent the park at least 4 days a week in the Spring /Summer. We have been greatly disappointed that the playground slice has been broke for well over a year. In fact my 5 year old injured himself on the slide two days ago. It is dangerous and needs to be repaired ASAP. My recommendation is to consider new updated playground equipment. Or in the least repair the slide immediately. Thank you. What activities do we take part in? • Playground Equipment • Winter sliding • Skating on pond • Trail and path to pond Additions or improvements? Playground equipment (slide) Rec. opportunities? The plastic slide is in dire need of fixing. The board attached to the entrance attracts curious kids. I see kids climb over the top frequently. Love the 'big' slides! However, on occasion my kids get gashes on their hands from the side of the slide while they're holding on. Something to look at? Love the vintage swings, keep'em! Other parks and surrounding parks do we frequent? We've been to all Mtka. Parks with various playgroups. Comments: We love our park! Any improvements would be greatly appreciated! All things listed below are things I've thought about over the last few years. • Shelter with seating, with a few permanent picnic tables under (would be nice for planned outings like National Night Out!) • Lights on path leading from Covington to pond. (would it discourage or encourage `more' mischief ?) • A more aesthetic opening leading to pond? • More garbage cans and add recycling (smoking can ? ?) • A curb, giant boulders or some sort of distinction from road to sidewalk on Covington leading to Sweetwater /Vine Ridge intersection. There is NOTHING stopping a vehicle from plowing over pedestrians while walking to park. • More native grasses and plants throughout. • A native wildflower /grases /plants 'field' placed in south side of grass area to attract butterflies and other little creatures. • • Park entrance sign fine, however, the plants and foliage that encompasses it is very tired looking. • A different surface under swings and Play -set area. • Space between practice wall and retaining wall is a bit of a safety hazard. 1 noticed the retaining wall by the practice course is starting to look like it is leaning forward. Kids climb on it all of the time ... scary! • If you do decide to get new signage for the parks, PLEASE keep it natural.. Eden Prairie's new park signage is so out of character. It looks cheep. I'm sure surrounding neighbors /hoods would offer to help with some of the improvements, especially the grunt work. I'm not sure what I could do to help, but I'm willing to volunteer some of my time to beautify Silverwood Park. Please call if you have any questions or would like to contact me to help out with this potential future project. Cathy VonEschen 19575 Vine Ridge Road 952.404.1310 Thanks for having this survey. I hope many people have sent their comments in to better help you! 0
