N INE YEARS AGO, the City of Shorewood and the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District (MCWD) joined forces to purchase approximately six acres of land located on the west side of County Road 19, between Smithtown Road and Glen Road, to be set aside as conservation open space. Previously, an old homestead that was long ago demolished occupied the site, as did a degraded wetland basin and an old- growth maple /basswood forest, a remnant of Minnesota's "Big Woods ". The City and MCWD developed an ambitious plan to restore and improve the site, addressing four basic elements: 1) water quality; 2) wetland restoration and preservation; 3) tree preservation; and 4) public education. To achieve these goals water was directed into a pond and wetland area areas adjacent to the pond and wetland area were replanted with a variety of native plant species. While a number of trees were removed in the process of building the pond and restoring the wetland, the westerly third or so of the site remained untouched, preserving the large maples and basswoods. A landscape design firm was hired by MCWD to plan Gideon Glen continued on page 2 Meetings and Events 11/1 Daylight Savings Time 11/3 Election Day 11/9 7:00 Pan City Council Meeting 11110 7:00 PM Park Comm.
