THE SHORE REPORT / DECEMBER 2009 Demo Garden Wraps Up T HIS PAST SUMMER Shorewood had a new addition to its park amenities: the Shorewood Community Demonstration Garden. Located in South Shore Community Park off Hwy 7, this garden produced 571 pounds of produce for the ICA Food Shelf! The garden was created and maintained by a small core of volunteers directed by organizers Mary Donahue, Patricia Hauser, Sandy Ahlstrom, and Nancy Mulhem. The City of Shorewood assisted with the creation of the community garden by providing four rain barrels, water in the rain barrels, garden space and funding for the fencing. Public works employees were instrumental in keeping the garden supplied with water during the long dry summer. In addition to supplying the ICA food shelf with much needed produce grown using organic practices, the Community Garden also provided gardening information to the public. Two Sundays a month, the garden organizers offered seminars on garden topics such as proper mulching, deciding whether to direct sow or plant seedlings, and amending soil. More than twenty -five residents visited the garden during the season to learn more about raising their own vegetables. Community Garden Watch the January newsletter for information on Shorewood's new community garden option for 2010! Residents may have the opportunity to rent a garden plot in Shorewood for the upcoming growing season! Recycling Service R ECYCLING WILL NOT be affected due the Christmas holiday in 2009. Please have your recycling curbside on your regular recycling day. Beginning in January, you will use your new Allied Waste recycling carts. Carts will be delivered with pick -up calendars and instructions the week of December 14. If you do not receive a cart that week, please contact the city right away! The first recycling pick -up is January 6, 2010. You will be receiving more information in the mail soon! www.ci.shorewood.mn.us Reduce, Recycle New Compostable Bag Law Enacted I T'S TIME TO PREPARE for another Minnesota winter. You have moved or covered plants, mowed the lawn that last time, and prepared for cold temperatures and snow cover. If your end -of -fall routine has you buying more traditional black plastic bags for your yard waste take note — beginning January 1, 2010, residents in the Twin Cities area who bag their yard and organic waste will be required to put their waste out for pickup in either paper bags or compostable plastic bags. Yard waste carts and paper bags have been around for years, and the technology of compostable plastic bags isn't new. Using paper and compostable plastic bags rather than traditional black plastic bags will greatly reduce the amount of plastic being sent to local composting facilities. Because local composters will have less plastic to screen out of their finished compost, processing costs will be reduced and the quality of the finished compost will be enhanced. Compostable plastic bags are distinct from regular plastic bags because they are usually clear or a green- tinted opaque color. Most home improvement, grocery, and hardware stores now carry them. If you don't see them at your local store, ask an employee; many store owners are just learning of this requirement and may appreciate the customer request. Once January 1, 2010 passes your yard waste pick -up service will no longer take the non - compostable plastic bags that you worked so hard to fill, and it's illegal to place yard waste in the trash. Begin watching for the appropriate bags where you shop, so you know where to find them when they are needed. For more information and a list of frequently asked questions, go to www. rethinkrecycl ing, org. Snowplow Safety NOWPLOWS TRAVEL MUCH SLOWER than the posted speeds. As in most large trucks, the driver's field of vision is severely restricted to the immediate rear from the cab of the truck. The driver must rely on mirrors to see to the rear and to the side. Mn/DOT offers these safe driving tips for travelers negotiating roadways during snow storms: • Turn on your headlights and turn off your cruise control. • Slow down! Allow at least an eight- second interval between your vehicle and a snowplow. • Stay behind the snowplow. The road behind a snowplow will be safer to drive on. • Never drive into a snow cloud. • Test the road surface frequently throughout your trip by tapping your brakes. Black ice is invisible and may be present in some areas, but not others. • Educate your children about snow plows. MnDOT has a great online video for kids, including safety tips for outside play. Go to www dot. state.mn. us and put snowplow video in the search engine. • Call 511 or visit www.511mn.org to get current information on road conditions. $Owhsare Family IT04 `Prt' Sunday, December 6; 1 -3 pm P'tto (Register by Dec 1) $5 per child /Adult FREE (children must be accompanied by an adult) Enjoy an afternoon of holiday caroling, cider, hot cocoa, and holiday baked goods.
