February 2010Be Counted! I delivered to every residence in the United States and Puerto Rico. The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States, and is required by the Constitution to take place every ten years. The 2010 Census is important because it will help determine the number of seats each state, including Minnesota, has in the U.S. House of Representatives, as well as informing planning and funding decisions for federal tax dollars. This census will be one of the shortest and simplest ever. The 2010 Census does not ask about bank account information, salary/income, citizenship or immigration status, and the census will never ask you for your Social Security number. including name, sex, age and date of birth, Hispanic origin, race, household relationship, and if you own or rent your home.Census information is protected by law, and the census cannot share your personal information with anyone — including other federal agencies and law enforcement. When you receive your census form, answer the ten short questions, and mail the form back in the postage -paid envelope provided. Households that do not return a form may receive a visit from a census taker, who will ask the questions in person. For more information about the U.S. Census, visit www.census.gov. Shorewood Road Restrictions MARCH 1 TO MAY 1 W eight restrictions are placed on local streets from March 1 to May 1. This measure is taken each year in order to protect city streets from serious damage and destruction. Exceptions are made for necessary vehicles, such as school buses and garbage trucks. Exceptions are not made for vehicles such as moving trucks, delivery trucks and construction equipment. Please remind any delivery personnel or workers on your property of the restriction so smaller trucks can be used as necessary. All streets are posted with the allowable weight limits. Please call city hall if you have any questions, 952.960.7900, or go to the city web site and look under Street & Utilities /Public Streets to see a map of road restrictions. Where is Your Fire Hydrant? E ARE FINALLY EXPERIENCING a true Minnesota winter —snowy and cold! With the snow comes the usual hazards — slippery walks, ice - covered roadways, and sharing the roads with snowplows. One thing you might not consider is the risk of "losing" fire hydrants buried by the snow. If you share your property with a fire hydrant, please make sure that the area around the fire hydrant gets shoveled. There should be a 3 foot wide path to and around the hydrant. The time saved if fire crews must respond to a fire in your neighborhood could be the difference it takes to save a house or a life. If you are unable to shovel around the hydrant, please talk with neighbors and see if there is someone who can adopt your hydrant for the winter. For questions regarding recycling or to report a missed Snowmobile Regulations in Effect T he sense of freedom you get while riding a snowmobile over Minnesota's snow - covered lands and frozen lakes can be exhilarating. Yet with that freedom comes responsibility. Minnesota DNR recommends that all recreational users ask before entering private lands, even if the land is not posted. That simple courtesy will go a long way to improve relationships between landowners and snowmobilers. BEFORE YOU RIDE • Read your Minnesota snowmobile regulations (available at www. dnr, state. mn. us). • Check your snowmobile and equipment. • Wear a helmet, eye protection, and proper clothing. OBEY ALL LAWS AND REGULATIONS • Maximum speed in Minnesota is 50 MPH. • Display current snowmobile registration. • Stay off the roadway, shoulder, and inside slope of state and county roads (see DNR guide) • Operate your snowmobile in the same direction as roadway traffic when riding one -half hour after sunset to one -half hour before sunrise. NEED A LARGER OR in order SECOND CART? Residents who find the 68- gallon cart does not meet their bi- weekly recycling needs may request a 90- gallon cart, or a second 68- gallon cart. Please contact Julie Moore, 952.960.7906, or email jmoore @ci.shore wood. mn.us with your name, address and phone number. You will be contacted with the information on the delivery and /or cart exchange. There is no additional charge for this service. • Be sure any youth operating your snowmobile has a safety certificate. • Stay off the median of four -lane roadways. • Come to a complete stop and look both ways before crossing a public roadway whether there is a stop sign or not. • Cross public roadways at a 90 degree angle. In the City of Shorewood, trails and parks prohibit the use of snowmobiles. For a complete list of Shorewood regulations, go to the city website, www. ci.shorewood.mn.us, or pick up a copy at city hall. Winter Water Quality When you are on the lake, keep in mind that anything you leave on the ice will be in the water next spring. This includes pet waste, cigarette butts, candy wrappers, and water bottles. Keep our lakes clean by keeping the ice clean! Municipal T he City of Shorewood pro- vides municipal water cus- tomers with high - quality, safe, reliable drinking water that meets federal and state water quality requirements. The City of Shorewood has two water towers located on the east and west ends of the city. These elevated tanks serve two purposes: the first is to provide adequate water pressure in the distribution system; and the second is to provide storage for the city's water supply. There are many advantages to municipal water, including reliability, quality, safety and a cost savings over a new well, well repairs, or buying bottled water. The city is required to publish an annual water quality report. Ro'v This report breaks down water testing results for municipal water customers To view the latest Water Quality Report, go to the city web site and click on Engineering /Drinking Water Report. If you are interested in municipal water, please contact the city to learn about connection possibilities.
