Elections ... continued on page 2 June 2010 www.ci.shorewood.mn.us Recycling Weeks for June 2010 All recycling must be curbside no later than 7 a.m. on recycling day. Mainland residents recycle June 9 and 23; Island residents recycle May 10 and 24. Landfill in Your Neighborhood These are words no one wants to hear, but someone has to have a landfill in their backyard. Although it is the right of all residents to create an unlimited amount of garbage and to choose not to recycle, everything you put curbside on Wednesday or Thursday mornings must go somewhere. Recycling is not necessary only for environmental purposes, it also gives us a place, other than the landfill, to put some of our garbage. By eliminating the paper, cardboard, cans, glass and plastic bottles from the landfill, a tremendous amount of space is saved, and it gives our current landfills additional years of capacity. Hennepin County has already determined that we will run out of available landfill space in the next few years. Incinerators are an option, but land space is needed, and money to build the facility is necessary. This would come from tax revenues which we all know are spread very thin right now. All Shorewood residents have access to curbside recycling. Please do your part, so our city will never be faced with where to place our landfill. If you do not have a recycling container, or have questions about how to recycle, please contact Julie Moore, 952.960.7906, or jmoore@ci.shorewood.mn.us. Absentee Voting Elections ... Continued from page 1 Absentee Voting Process for Military Personnel and Civilians who are Overseas - Military personnel and civilians who are temporarily or permanently overseas, military personnel who are stationed in the U.S. but away from their hometown, and their spouses and dependents, are eligible to vote in Minnesota by absentee ballot under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) and Minnesota state law. Temporarily Overseas Avoterwho istemporarily overseas is a citizen who would be qualified as an eligible voter to vote at their polling location in Minnesota if they were not overseas. Permanently Overseas A voter permanently overseas is a citizen who currently has no plans to return to Minnesota but is authorized by federal law to vote in Minnesota because they maintained residence in Minnesota for at least 20 days immediately prior to their departure from the United States. Voters who are permanently overseas are permitted to vote only for the offices of president, vice president, senator in Congress, and representative in Congress. Uniformed or Military Personnel A uniformed or military voter is one who is a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, the commissioned corps of the Public Health Service, or the commissioned corps of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and who is absent from their precinct on the date of the election due to their service. The easiest way for the overseas voters listed above to apply for an absentee ballot is to use Minnesota's Military and Overseas Voter Service at https: / /minnesota. overseasvotefoundation.org/ overseas /home.htm. This free online tool assists people in filling out the Federal Postcard Application (FPCA) to apply for an absentee ballot. Those who choose not to use the Minnesota Military and Overseas Voter Service may instead download and complete the Federal Postcard Application (FPCA) to apply for an absentee ballot. Be sure to read the instructions carefully and fill out the form completely. In addition, a voter's spouse, parent, sibling or child over 18 years old may apply for an absentee ballot on the voter's behalf and may submit the FPCA by fax or by mail. Military personnel may fax their FPCA toll free to DSN 223 -5527. More information about Elections and Absentee voting can be found on the Secretary of State's website at www.sos. state.mn.us or on the city's website at www.ci.shorewood. mn.us, or call the city at 952- 960 -7911. a Sprinkling Restrictions Residents and businesses in 1 Shorewood are restricted to watering before 11 a.m. and after 4:30 p.m. No I seven days per week. Children's toys, private wells and hand watering are exempt. Complete information is ; available on the city web sites° +- Sealcoating This Summer Sealcoating our roads has been a very productive improvement program for a number of years to extend the life of the road. The process is a two -step application of asphalt emulsion and stone. The emulsion serves two functions; one to fill cracks in the pavement, and second to bond the stone to the existing surface. The stone provides a renewed driving surface that increases tire traction and improves stopping distance for added safety. The sealcoat process allows for quick application and driver access to the roadway. Once the stone is applied and rolled into the emulsion, curing or setting of the asphalt binder begins to take place immediately. Cold and wet weather hampers the curing of the asphalt emulsion and can cause delays in the sweeping of the rocks. The following streets are scheduled for sealcoating this summer: Broms Boulevard, Chartwell Hill, Chestnut Court, Chestnut Terrace, Covington Court, Covington Road, Elbert Point, Mckinley Circle, Muirfield Circle, Near Mountain Boulevard, Old Market Road, Radisson Inn Road, Radisson Road, Shady Hills Alley, Shady Hills Circle, Shady Hills Road, Shady lane, Shore Road, Sierra Circle, Silver Lake Trail, Sweetwater Circle, Sweetwater Court, Sweetwater Curve, Waterford Circle, Whitney Circle, Vine Ridge Road, Waterford Court, Wedgewood Drive, Mallard Lane, Teal Circle, Enchanted Lane, Dellwood Lane, Enchanted Dr, Enchanted Cove, Shady Island Road, Shady Island Cir, Shady Island Pt, Radisson Entrance Road. Residents will be notified by letter when the sealcoating will occur, and are asked to cooperate with having sprinkler systems off before and during the process as described in the resident letter. If you have any questions about the sealcoating of your road that are not answered in the letter, please contact the city engineer at 952.960.7910.
