More on elections: page 5 August 2010 www.ci.shorewood.mn. us Recycling Weeks for August 2010 All recycling must be curbside no later than 7 a.m. on recycling day. Mainland residents recycle August 4 and 18; Island residents recycle August 5 and 19. Drop It In! The single sort recycling program has been very successful in Shorewood. It has taken some patience on the part of residents to get the system flowing, but the program is now running smoothly in most neighborhoods. Shorewood has offered several challenges to our recycling contractor, including the layout of the city and very long driveways. The City of Shorewood is seeing over 80% participation in the recycling program. This makes a huge difference in the garbage going out of our city into landfills and incinerators. Thank you to everyone who participates! The following items should be placed in the recycling cart: • newspaper and inserts • magazines and catalogs • junk mail and envelopes • office and school papers • cardboard • boxboard • brown paper bags • aluminum cans • tin and steel cans (rinsed) • glass jars and bottles • plastic milk jugs • plastic bottles (with a neck) • phone books Larger Car Needs If you have found that your recycling cart is overflowing by the time your recycling is schedule to be collected, larger or extra carts are available for no charge. Please email jmoore@ ci.shorewood.mn.us with your address and request, or call 952.960.7906 to arrange delivery. Recycling Fluorescent Bulbs The increased use of fluorescent bulbs has decreased our energy use, but increased our need for places to recycle the bulbs. Fluorescent bulbs contain mercury, and they may not be placed in your regular garbage. The city often receives questions about where to conveniently dispose of used bulbs. Although Hennepin County Household Hazardous Waste drop off facilities and events take the bulbs, most residents would prefer to get rid of the bulbs quickly rather than driving to a facility in Bloomington or Brooklyn Park, or waiting for a drop -off event! Shorewood residents have several options. We are able to use the Carver County Environmental Services facility, located at 116 Peavey Circle in Chaska (approximately 1 mile south of Hwy 5 just off of Hwy 41). For hours, please call 952.361.1835. Home Depot stores also take the bulbs at no charge, as do some other retailers. Ask wherever you buy your bulbs if they have a take -back program. If you have any questions regarding Household Hazardous Waste, please contact Hennepin County at 612.348.3777. State Increases Building /Plumbing Permit Fee A provision in the supplemental budget act raises the state building permit surcharge for one year —from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011 —from 50 cents to $5. A compromise that spares the Construction Codes and Licensing Division (CCLD) of the Department of Labor and Industry (DLI) from drastic budget reductions means that the surcharge on building permits will temporarily increase. The downturn in the construction industry has greatly diminished the annual revenues in the CCLD. The division depends on revenues received from plan reviews, permits, licenses, and surcharges. During the 2010 session, CCLD permit surcharge fees applicable to fixed fee permits for one year from 50 cents to $5 (effective July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011). City fees have not increased. At this time, mechanical permits are not affected. If you have any questions regarding the fees, please contact the city at 952.960.7900.
