Yard Waste Options for Residents
The cooler nights of fall will soon
have the leaves falling, residents
raking, and residents calling the
city to find out what they can
do with all of the leaves! State
law prohibits yard waste from
going into the garbage and on to
landfills and burners. Including
yard waste in your garbage cart
can result in your garbage being
left at the curb, or a large fine for
your garbage hauler.
Some homeowners are able
to tackle the leaves with frequent
mowing with a mulch mower.
If you must collect the leaves
and do not have a compost
area in your yard, there are a
few options. One is to contract
with your garbage hauler for
year -round compost collection.
This allows residents to have
a container provided by their
garbage hauler for unlimited
collection of yard waste. If you
find you do not need year -round
collection, all garbage haulers
have a "bag" service where you
pay per bag for collection. Contact
your garbage hauler for pricing
and instructions. All bags left
curbside must be compostable.
The compostable plastic bags
must state somewhere on the
box that they meet ASTM D6400
standards for composting and
are "compostable ". (they must
say compostable, not just
biodegradable). The 30- gallon
Kraft paper bags are also allowed.
Since the new law went into effect
in January, 2010, the bags are
easy to find at local discount,
hardware and grocery stores.
Another option is to take your
yard waste to a drop -off facility.
The City of Shorewood does not
run a facility, so residents will
have to take their yard waste to
a commercial facility. Commercial
facilities allow you to bring your
waste in non - compostable bags,
but most require that you empty
them and take the bags with you.
To find a facility, go to the city
web site under Recycling. At the
bottom of the page there is an
area to type in your waste item
(in this case, yard waste) and
zip code. A list of facilities will be
displayed.
If you have any questions about
disposal of yard waste, or other
hard -to -get- rid -of items, please
contact the city, 952.960.7900.
