Daylight Savings Time Ends T he Excelsior Firefighters want to remind you that it is time to change the batteries in your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors when you change your clocks on Sunday, November 7. A working smoke detector can more than double a person's chances of surviving a home fire. More than 90 percent of homes in the United States have smoke detectors, but one - third are estimated to have dead or missing batteries. Take this time to replace your smoke detectors if they are more than 8 years old. Write the date you installed your new detectors on the inside of the cover or somewhere the date can be easily seen. It may also be time to add smoke detectors to your home. There should be a smoke detector on every level of your home, outside every sleeping area, in every bedroom, in hallways, in the laundry room, and any room with a door that can be closed. The more working smoke detectors you have in your home, the more time your family will have to escape.
