E ach year, the City of Shorewood serves as a
drop -off site for toys to be given to Resource
West and food for ICA foodshelf. The Toy Chest
Drive provides toys to low income children up
to age 18 in the local area. Items for teens are
especially needed each year. Volunteers for
or '- - rit
sorting, counting and assisting with distribution are
also needed. For information on volunteering, call
Resource West at 952.988.5350. Cash donations,
toys and non - perishable food items may be
dropped off at city hall during business hours
through Friday, December 15.
E ach year, the City of Shorewood has openings
on various commissions and boards. Each
position is for a term of one to three years. Meeting
times, dates, and time commitments vary, so there
is something that can work for most residents
wanting to get involved in city government.
Currently, the city is taking applications from
residents seeking to serve the city on one of these
boards or commissions. You may express interest
for a specific position, or offer service wherever
the City Council sees a fit. More information on
the positions are on the city web site.
Some commissions and boards served by
T he Arctic Fever committee has been working
all year to make the 5th anniversary of Arctic
Fever the best celebration of winter yet! This free
festival began as a one day collaboration between
the cities of Shorewood, Tonka Bay and Excelsior.
Five years later, the day is full of free fun for the
entire family, and events have extended to a
second day!
The AF Committee invites residents to bring
family and friends to celebrate the fun a Minnesota
winter brings! It is easy to spend the winter months
inside warm homes, forgetting the great things
only winter offers! A schedule and coloring contest
sheet for kids ages 11 and under can be found in
residents include: Planning and Park Commissions,
Lake Mtka Communications Commission, Mtka
Community Education, Lake Mtka Conservation
District, various Hennepin County boards, and
Minnehaha Creek and Riley Purgatory Bluff Creek
Watershed Districts.
Interested residents should send a letter of
interest by early January to the City of Shorewood,
5755 Country Club Road, Shorewood, MN
55331, or fax to 952.474.0128, or email cityhall@
ci.shorewood.mmus. A resume may be included,
but is not required. For more information, contact
the city at 952.960.7900.

on the Arctic Fever web site, wwwarcticfever.net.
Donate to the Event
Although committee members volunteer their time,
and many businesses come forward to sponsor
events, donations are needed to keep this event
free to the public. To make credit card donations,
simply go to the Arctic Fever web site. Checks may
be submitted in care of Arctic Fever to Shorewood
City Hall. Thank you for your support!

Recycling Weeks for
December 2010
All recycling must be curbside
no later than 7 a.m. on recycling
day. Mainland residents recycle
December 8 and 22; Island residents
recycle December 9 and 23.
No holiday delays in December.
Christmas Tree Compost by Hauler
horewood residents can
recycle their Christmas trees
through their contracted garbage
hauler. To ensure your tree is
collected and composted, please:
♦ Remove all decorations and
wire;
♦ Do NOT wrap the tree in a plastic
bag; and,
♦ Place the tree at the end of your
driveway by 7 am the day of
your garbage collection. Trees
set out early risk getting buried
by snowplows, making it difficult
to remove from the snow.
Information provided by haulers
follows. Please contact your
hauler for questions.

Christmas Light Recycling
A s you test holiday lights this
season, there is a resource
to recycle non - working lights or
unwanted lights. The Recycling
Association of Minnesota has
partnered with an organization to
collect the wire from non - working
lights and extension cords.
Residents may drop off strings of
non - working or unwanted units at
the Carver County Environmental
Services drop -off, one block east
of Highway 41 , 116 Peavey Circle,
Chaska. Drop -off hours are:
• Wednesday, 12 -7 pm
• Thursday, 12 -6 pm
• Friday, 10 am -4 pm
• Saturday, 8 am -12 pm
Hours change in December.
Check the Carver County web site
for changes, wwwco.carver
mn.us/ec, or call 952.361.1835.
Shorewood City Hall also accepts
lights and cords. Please drop
them off at city hall during regular
business hours.
Winter Recycling Wisdom
D uring the winter months
residents are encouraged to
watch the weather report when
putting recycling carts out the
evening before recycling. During
major snowstorms snowplows
can knock carts over creating a
mess for the homeowner. During
snowstorms, putting the cart out
by 7 am on recycling day may be
a safer option.
Residents are also encouraged
to make sure that recycling carts
are either put in the driveway on
the opposite side of mailboxes,
or are placed at least three -feet
from mailboxes. The electronic
arms of the recycling truck need
a clearance in which to work, and
this gives the driver plenty of room
to manipulate the arm, collect the
recycling, and not damage your
mailbox in the process.
Shorewood Recyciing
Numbers
Recycling numbers in Shorewood
are higher than ever before. Some
of the reason might be due to the
simplified single -sort method, or
the RecycleBank reward program,
but much is due to the dedication
of residents. During the first three
quarters of the month, the city
averaged a recycling participation
rate of 85.2 %, with the month of
September showing an all -time
high 89.8% participation! Thank
you for the special effort it takes
to make recycling in Shorewood
work!
2011 Recycling Calendars are
being mailed by Allied Waste
in December. Watch for yours
in the mail!

D uring the winter months,
some people feel the deer do
not have adequate food sources
and believe that supplementing
their diets with grain, corn or hay
is helpful. In fact, the contrary is
true. Those who feed the deer
are actually doing more harm
than good.
The normal feeding behavior
of big game animals allows them
to spread out as they graze or
browse. Artificial feeding disrupts
that behavior and prompts deer
to crowd together in small areas
where they are more likely to
be chased by dogs and hit
by cars, and where there is a
greater chance of passing along
communicable diseases.
Deer have a complex digestive
system that is not adapted to
digest bread and many types
of hay. Deer, like other wildlife,
adapt to winter. The Shorewood
