Spring Flooding
M innehaha Creek Watershed District has been
busy studying the affects our winter snow will
have on spring flooding and the main conclusion
is that if you have experienced flooding before,
you will probably experience flooding this spring!
To prepare for the expected Floods, home
owners in flood prone areas can do a few things
to help reduce the damage to homes:
• Be sure your neighborhood storm drain is free
of debris so water can flow freely.
• Keep window wells, gutters and downspouts
clear of debris.
• Remove excess snow from your home's
foundation.
• Make sure your sump pump is operational.

Property Valuation Noti
H ennepin County will be mailing property
valuation notices to Shorewood residents on
April 6 —watch for it in your mail. Residents who
have questions regarding their property valuation
notice orwho wish to discuss the estimated market
value for their property should call the Hennepin
County Assessor's Office, 612 - 348 -3046.
If you are not satisfied after discussing the
information with an assessor, you may appeal your
valuation notice at the Open Book meeting. The
Open Book meeting for Shorewood is scheduled
for Monday, May 2, from 5 pm - 7 pm at City Hall.
The meeting is conducted under the authority of

• Contact your insurance agent to discuss flood
insurance.
Al homes with a sump pump may easily check
the performance of the pump by simply removing
the cover and slowly pouring a bucket ofwater into
the basin until the float rises and the pump motor
begins. Once the float lowers, the pump should
stop. If this does not happen, it may need a new
float. Ifthat is not the problem, it may need a float
switch. Ifyou have an active sump pump, a back
up pump may be advised.

the Hennepin County Assessor, which will conduct
an "open- book" process for valuation appeals. At
the Open Book meeting, the county assessor's
staff will review the valuation with the property
owner. The valuation reflects a property's value
on January 1, 2011, and is used for property taxes
payable in 2012. Anyone who is unable to attend
the meeting on May 2 may retain their right to
proceed to the County Board meeting to be held in
June. The deadline for applications for the County
Board meeting is May 25. Specific information
about this is listed on the back of your valuation
