Don't Throw Plastic Garden Pots
he 2011 Garden Container
Recycling Program is in full
swing and runs through October
15. The Minnesota Nursery &
Landscape Association (M N LA)
began this environmental
initiative in the spring of 2006.
Plastic pots take up substantial
space in landfills; they do not
readily decompose and remain
intact for many years. Do your
part to rescue plastic from the
landfills, and recycle your pots,
trays and hanging baskets at a
neighborhood garden center!
Bring clean, plastic garden pots
to the drop sites listed here. Many
companies will take plastic all
season, while some sites will take
pots only on two special recycling
weekends.

Night to Unite
ight to Unite (formerly National Night
Out) is Tuesday, August 2. This is a great
opportunity to host an event to become better
acquainted with your neighbors! Events can be
as simple as meeting at the end of the driveway
for ice cream, or as involved as a neighborhood
softball game! Getting to know your neighbors
not only helps with the Shorewood sense of
community, it helps fight crime!
Although most South Lake area residents
feel fairly safe from criminal activity, crime does
occur in this area. One of the best ways to keep
it from affecting you and your neighbors is to get
to know each other, even if it is just on a casual
basis.
One tradition that all residents are asked to
participate in is the display of outdoor lights.
Should you host an activity, local council
members, or police and fire officials are happy
to stop by your event to meet neighbors and

to discuss concerns or answer questions.
Kids especially love when police and fire bring
equipment for them to explore! The benefits your
neighborhood will derive from MNTU will most
certainly extend beyond the one night.
The South Lake Minnetonka Police Department
encourages you to organize a Night To Unite
activity in your neighborhood. Members of the
SLMPD are making themselves available to stop
by these activities to answer questions, provide
you with crime prevention tips, and get to know
each other. Excelsior Fire District firefighters will
also be visiting these block parties.
Please contact Community Service Supervisor
David Hohertz at (952) 474 -3261 to have SLMPD
officers attend your event. For fire department
