9D CAF - dynamic sign.docx® #9D MEETING TYPE City of Shorewood Council Meeting Item Regular Meeting Title / Subject: Country Club Road Dynamic Sign & Pavement Marking Meeting Date: 5/29/12 Prepared by: James Landini Reviewed by: Jean Panchyshyn Attachments: Resolution, detail Policy Consideration: Whether to address a road safety issue with dynamic speed sign(s) and paint striping. Background: At the February 13, 2012, Council meeting, residents along Country Club Road raised concerns about traffic speed and traffic volume. Many conversations have occurred since that Council meeting. The South Lake Minnetonka Police Department (SLMPD) deployed the speed buggy and collected data and the SLMPD has performed speed enforcement along the route. MNDOT will consider a dynamic speed display and striping for a municipal state aid project. MNDOT requires a construction plan and a request for a project number. Staff seeks direction to create a construction plan and direction to request a project number for a maximum of two dynamic speed signs, 2,356 If of centerline and 2,356 If of edge lines. The striping should be performed after the sealcoat with the city wide striping project and the sign could be quoted after a MNDOT job number is assigned. Financial or Budget Considerations: This project would be funded by the Municipal State Aid Street Account but was not specifically budgeted for. Both signs and striping are estimated at $15,000 installed. Options: 1. Direct staff to request a MNDOT project number and gather quotes. 2. Direct staff to do a different task. 3. Do nothing. Recommendation / Action Requested: Provide direction to staff. Next Steps and Timelines: Request MNDOTjob number; obtain quotes for signage and striping. Connection to Vision / Mission: Enhancing the road signage and striping provides the residents with a quality public service. Mission Statement: The City of Shorewood is committed to providing residents quality public services, a healthy environment, a variety of attractive amenities, a sustainable tax base, and sound financial management through effective, efficient, and visionary leadership.
