December 2013 Shore ReportTaxation Hearing The Shorewood City Council, at its August 26th meeting, adopted a preliminary property tax levy for 2014 that raises the city portion of the property tax by 3 %. The 2014 proposed levy of $4,906,218 is $142,899 higher than the 2013 levy of $4,763,319. The proposed 2014 budget is available for inspection at City Hall during normal business hours, or on our web site, www. ci. shore wood. m n. us. ATruth -In- Taxation public hearing is Monday, December 2, at 7 pm, at Shorewood City Hall, 5755 Country Club Road. Staff will present information regarding the budget, property tax levy, and the property tax impact on a variety of property types and values. Residents are encouraged to contact Finance Director Bruce DeJong at 952.960.7903 with questions or comments on the proposed budget and tax levy. Commission volunteers Needed Each year, the City of Shorewood has openings on various commissions and boards. Each position is for a term of one to three years. Meeting times, dates, and time commitments vary, so there is something that can work for most residents wanting to get involved in city government. Currently, the city is taking applications from residents seeking to serve the city on one of these boards or commissions. You may express interest for a specific position, or offer service wherever the City Council sees a fit. More information on the positions are on the city web site. Some commissions and boards served by residents include: Planning and Park Commissions, Lake Minnetonka Communications Commission, Minnetonka Community Education, Lake Minnetonka Conservation District and various Hennepin County boards. Interested residents should send a letter of interest by early January to the City of Shorewood, 5755 Country Club Road, Shorewood, MN 55331, or fax to 952.474.0128, or email cityhall@ ci.shorewood.mn.us. A resume may be included, but is not required. For more information, contact the city at 952.960.7900. Links to descriptions of the board and commission positions may be found on the city web site under Job /Volunteer Opportunities. Removal Priorities norities for snow removal operations have been designed to make roadways clear for safe travel. Once roadways are clear and an initial pass has been completed through cul -de -sacs, crews will make a final widening of roadways and clean up of cul -de -sacs. During successive snowfalls, the final widening of roadways and cleanup of cul -de -sacs may not occur until after the snowfall is complete. Once roadways have been cleared, the Public Works Departmentwill begin to clear sidewalks and trails. The city recently completed an additional 10,000 feet of new sidewalk on Smithtown Road and County Road 19. The period of time that ittakes for city crews to clear the walkways and trails varies by the amount of snow that falls for an individual event. Public Works tries to have the walkways and trails plowed within 2 to 3 days after a snow event. If you notice dangerous conditions, such as slippery intersections, please contact the city at 952.960.7900, or reportthe issue using the Wublic Works online reporting system found on the home page of the city web site. www.ci.shorewood.mn.us Keep Our Lakes The salt we use around our home in the winter to melt ice and snow can damage our lakes and rivers harming fish, insects, plants and all the other organisms that live in these water bodies. To reduce your impacts this winter consider: • Removing as much snow and ice from your driveway and walkways as possible before applying de -icer is one of the best actions you can take. Salt and other de -icers work best when there is only a thin layer of ice and snow to melt. Be careful however as shovelling heavy snow and over - exerting yourself can lead to a heart attack. • Reducing the amount of salt you apply. If there is salt on your driveway after the snow and ice melts this is a sign that Recycling Weeks for December 2013 All recycling must be curbside no later than 7 a.m. on recycling day. Mainland residents recycle December 4 and 18; Island residents recycle December 5 and 19. Report misses: 952.941.5174 Salt -Free This too much salt has been applied. • Applying de -icer before snow falls to reduce the amount needed. Urea -based fertilizers are often recommended as an alternative de -icer; however, these contain nitrogen and when washed down driveways and storm sewers can cause harm to fish and other aquatic organisms. Sand or other grit such as fine gravel is a good alternative to chemical de- icers. Use sparingly however, as excess sand can clog storm drains and accumulate in streams. On dry days sweep up any excess salt and de -icer to prevent it from entering water bodies. On extremely cold days (below -20° C) there is no point of applying Winter Spring Tree Sale Returns The tree sale offered in cooperation with City of Minnetonka in 2012 will return this spring. A limited choice of trees will be offered on a first -come, first - served basis to residents at the city's wholesale price. Trees purchased at wholesale are in dirt so can be cared for in the container until ready to plant. They will carry no warranty. Order sheets and tree types and descriptions will be in the February newsletter. The trees must be picked up by residents at Minnetonka Public Works Department in April. The city is offering the tree sale Holiday Toy and Food Collection Each year, the City of Shorewood serves as a drop - off site for toys to be given to the Resource West and food for ICA foodshelf. The Toy Chest Drive provides toys to low income children up to age 18 in the local area. Items forteens are especially needed each year. Volunteers for sorting, counting and assisting with distribution are also needed. For information on volunteering, call the Resource Center at 952.988.5350. For information on the food shelf, please contact ICA at 952.938.0729. Toys and non - perishable food items may salt as it will be too cold for it to work. At this temperature sand or grit is your best option. There are a lot of products claiming to be eco- friendly. The best advice is to read the labels and research the ingredients used in the product.
