May 2014 Shore ReportIli, 0 11 M :iTiTi Watering Ordinance in Effect Lawn watering uses a significant portion of our water supply. It is important that residents and businesses follow the city's watering ordinance. This allows Shorewood's water system not only an adequate opportunity to replenish the supply in the city's water storage tanks, but also ensures there is enough water for all uses, some of which include vital services such as firefighting. The city's ordinance states that residents and businesses can water before 11 am and after 4:30 pm, May 1- September 30. Residents are advised to workwith their sprinkler system providerto make sure watering times are scheduled to water within ordinance hours. Remember to check the timer on your watering system after power outages so that you are not in violation of the restriction. Fees for violating the water use restrictions are determined by the number of water restriction violations issued to the owner and are as follows: • First offense - $50 fee • Each additional offense -$25 fee increase (e.g. 2nd violation $75, 3rd violation $100, etc.) No warnings are given for violation of the watering restrictions. Residents are encouraged to check the city web site for lawncare information which includes lawn water needs. EXEMPTIONS: Private wells are exempt from the ordinance, however, the cityencourages homeowners to conserve their water resources during peak hours. Activities such as play toys, car washing, and hand watering are exempt ifattended. Call the city at 952.960.7900, if you have questions. Help Pollinators Thrive in Your Yard and Garden ollinators are necessary for the life cycle of many plants and food sources. We often think of bees when we think of food pollination, but pollinators also include moths, wasps, butterflies, beetles, ants, flies, hummingbirds and bats. Recently, pollinators have received a lot of attention due to their declining populations, mostly due to pesticides and habitat loss. There are many simple things you can do to create a healthy habitat for pollinators in your own yard and garden. Attract pollinators with native plants (a list of suggestions is under yard and garden on the web site). Where you purchase native and non - native plants for your yard and garden does make a difference. When purchasing garden plants, ask if any pesticides have been used on them, as these can remain in the plant and harm pollinators. A local organization, Humming for Bees, www.hummingforbees. com, keeps an up to date list of businesses that sell pollinator safe plants and seeds. Only apply pesticides to your yard and garden if other alternatives have been explored first as part of an integrated pest management approach.
