pinking Spring Tree Sale
The City of Shorewood has again
been invited to participate in
the spring tree sale hosted by the
City of Minnetonka. In an effort
to offer a greater variety of trees
to our residents, we will take pre -

order exactly the trees we need,
thus allowing a greater selection
of trees for residents.

waste can be put to better use.
Many types of food scraps, along
with leaves and yard trimmings,
can be combined in your backyard
compost bin to create a valuable
soil additive for your lawn and
garden. The remaining organic
waste can easily be composted
through commercial composting.
This includes meat, dairy, bread
and paper, which should not be
included in a backyard program.
For more information on
backyard composting, go to www.

All trees offered in the spring sale
will be guaranteed neonictinoid

our pollinators.
What Happens To Our Bees its Winter?
Although pollinators such as
wasps and bumblebees often
die in the winter, honeybees, or
most important pollinator, has a
unique winter survival strategy.
The honey they create using
the many flowers available to
them during the summer months,
actually provide fuel for the
honeybees throughout the winter.
The bees actually cluster to stay
warm, rotating spots so no one
bee gets stuck being on the colder
edge the entire winter.
In climates such as ours, bees
must do all of their collecting
during a short window of time. This
is where our bee safe practices
can help.
What You Can Do
• Plant late bloomers. When it
comes to enhancing your garden's
fall bloom, consider adding late -
flowering plants like goldenrod and
asters that are critical to a colony's
final push to bring home food for
the winter.
• Avoid systemic pesticides.
Certain pesticides have toxins that
invade all plant tissues (instead of
just living on the plants' surface),
and bees bring these chemicals
to their nests when they collect
nectar and pollen. A group of
chemicals called neonicotinoids
has been shown to contribute to
colony collapse disorder.
• Encourage early- spring blooms.
Spring brings welcome relief
for honeybees with a chance to
restock dwindling floral supplies.
Flowering trees — willows, maples,
and the like— provide some of the
earliest opportunities for bees to
forage, so try to encourage their
toxin -free growth when you can.
The City of Shorewood has
pledged to not use neonicotinoids
on city properties, and has worked
with Humming For Bees, a local
grassroots organization, to allow
planting of white clover in some
city parks in an effort to offer a safe
food supply for our pollinators.
For more information, go to www.
hummingforbees. org.

their bank with the new account number. This was misworded and should have stated that online bill pay account

bill using an online bill pay system where the billing stub is not included, make sure your check reference reflects
the new account number and the service address. If you have questions, please call the city at 952.960.7900.
