Get Involved in Your
is easy to ignore how things get done in the
city: your street gets plowed, your toilet flushes
and everything goes away, your park is mowed
and your potholes get filled. Now you can be a
part of the system by joining one of Shorewood's
commissions or representing the city on a board.
Planning Commissir
There are currently two three -year openings avail-
able on the Planning Commission. The Planning
Commission serves as an advisory commission
to the City Council on planning and development
issues. The Planning Commission meets the first
Tuesday of the month at 7 pm. A tentative second
meeting is scheduled for the third Tuesday as
needed.
There are currently two three -year positions
open on the city park commission. The Park
Commission serves as an advisory commission

to the City Council on park and park programming
issues. The Park Commission meets at 7 p.m. on
the second Tuesday of the month.
Board Appointments
The City Council appoints representatives to
several boards each year. Currently, Shorewood
is seeking representatives to serve on the Lake
Minnetonka Communication Commission board,
and the Minnetonka Community Education
board. Representatives would serve one to two
year terms and would attend board meetings.
Representatives report back to the City Council
as needed.
To apply for any of these volunteer positions,
please send a letter of interest to the city. You
may attach a resume if available, but it is not
required. For more information contact city hall
by email, or call 952.960.7900.
City Council Approves 2015 mudget
election administration, newsletter and website
publications, ball field maintenance, and other
services.
Although most homeowners should see only a
modest increase in their property tax due to city
budget decisions, individual property taxes may
have changed due to home valuation differences
and increased tax levies from other jurisdictions.
Home values are based on the estimated taxable
value on January 2, 2014 as determined by the
Hennepin County Assessor.
The 2015 budget and tax levy are available on the
city web site, www.ci.shorewood.mn.us. Questions
about the budget, tax levy, or individual property
changes may be directed to Bruce DeJong,
Finance Director, at 952 - 960 -7903 or bdejong@
ci.shorewood.mn.us.
n December 1, the Shorewood City Council
approved the 2015 general fund budget and
tax levy. The operations ofthe city are being funded
with a 1.5% increase in the city property tax levy.
The increased taxes total $72,879 and are spread
over almost 3,000 properties. This is only the
second increase in the property tax levy in five
years and lower than last year's. The council and
staff worked hard to hold the line on property taxes,
while providing the same level of front -line services.
The City of Shorewood gets approximately
23% of each property tax dollar. The remaining
77% goes to Hennepin County, the Minnetonka
or Westonka school districts, and taxing districts
such as the Met Council, Metro Mosquito Control
District, Minnehaha Creek or Riley Purgatory Bluff
Creek watershed districts, and others.
The city portion of your tax dollar is used
to provide police and fire service, parks and
recreation, road maintenance, snow plowing,

Watch Your Sidewalk's Salt Intake
For years, doctors have told
people to stick to a low -salt
diet. According to the Minnesota
Pollution Control Agency (MPCA),
our waters should follow the same
advice on icy sidewalks in the
winter.
When snow and ice start to
accumulate on Minnesota roads,
parking lots, and sidewalks, one
of the more common reactions
is to apply salt, which contains
chloride - -a water pollutant. When
snow and ice melt, most of the
salt goes with it, washing into
our lakes, streams and rivers.
Once in the water, there's no way
to remove the chloride, and it
becomes a pollutant.
According to Brooke Asleson,
MPCAWatershed Specialist, "salt
is a real threat to water quality. It
only takes one teaspoon of road
salt to permanently pollute five
gallons of water. We are trying to
spread the word that less is more
when it comes to applying salt
because at high concentrations,
chloride can harm the fish and
plant life in our waters."
Check out the MPCA's video
on winter sidewalk and driveway
maintenance, with tips on types
of salt, when to use it and how
much to use: http: / /youtu.be/

'arli ira Salt I le,
Here are some ways for
homeowners to reduce salt
use while still making sure your
sidewalk and driveway is safe:
• Shovel. The more snow and ice
you remove manually, the less salt
you will have to use and the more
Recycle Your Holiday ignts
id this holiday season leave
you with a few unwanted or
unworking holiday lights? Don't
toss them in the garbage -- recycle
them! The City of Shorewood
collects holiday lights for recycling.
Unwanted extension cords are
also accepted. Simply bring your
unwanted lights and cords to city
hall during regular business hours,
Monday through Friday 8 am -4:30
pm. The bin is located in the front
entry.
There is also a battery
collection bin for household
batteries at city hall.

effective it can be. Break up ice
with an ice scraper and decide if
application of a de -icer or sand
is even necessary to maintain
traction.
• More salt does not mean more
melting. Use less than four
pounds of salt per 1,000 square
feet (an average parking space
is about 150 square feet). One
pound of salt is approximately a
heaping 12 -ounce coffee mug.
• 15 degrees is too cold for salt
to work. Most salts stop working
around this temperature. Instead,
use sand for traction.
• Sweep up extra salt. If salt or
sand is visible on dry pavement,
it is no longer doing any work and
will be washed away.
Arctic Fever

t s time to sharpen those skate
blades and get ready to get on
the rinks and burn that bottled up
winter energy! The Shorewood
Public Works Department is
waiting for a few days of below -
freezing temperatures so they
can begin the task of preparing
Shorewood ice rinks for skaters.
Once the ice is ready, warming
houses will open at Cathcart,
Badger, Manor Parks and our
new rink at Freeman Park.

Tearing Your

Wen shoveling or blowing
from your driveway,
please do not blow snow into
the street. This is especially
crucial when snow plows have
already cleared the street. The
resulting pile of snow will likely

ice, remaining a hazard to drivers
until the next snow requiring a

your driveway, make sure that
the snow is pushed completely
across the street, keeping the
main road clear.
Keep Cars
Road
During and after a snowfall,
please be aware that cars
parked in the roadway can be a
hazard to snow plow drivers and
may result in your road not being
plowed. It also prevents plows
from removing snow curb to curb
and makes for messy streets
all winter. Whenever possible,
remove cars from the roadway
during a snow storm.
Speed Limit Change For Strawberry Lane
trawberry lane, the road
that heads north and south
from Minnewashta Elementary
School, is heavily traveled,
especially during the before
and after school hours. Due
to a number of pedestrians on
the roadway, there have been
concerns about speed on the
street.
After consideration of pros and
cons of lowering the speed limit
on the roadway, the city council
determined that lowering the
speed from 30 mph to 25 mph
was in the best interest of safety
in the area.
Signs have been posted and
motorists are asked to please
slow down and obey the speed
limits on all roadways.
