Give Your TV a Proper Retirement
or many Americans, the Super
Bowl is nothing less than a
holiday. Last year the Super Bowl
had a U.S. viewership of over 111
million. That's a lot of televisions!
The sale of televisions takes ajump
thattime of year, either because of
the big game or because of the
big sales. Whatever the reason, if
you upgrade your TV, don't banish
your old TV to the basement and
don't throw it in the trash! Give
it the retirement it deserves and
recycle it! Electronics recycling
has never been easier or more
important.
MostTVs and computers contain
a cathode ray tube (CRT), which
contains 2 to 8 pounds of lead.
Electronic products containing
a CRT may not be placed in
the garbage. There are retail
establishments not far from home
that take your old electronics free!
Visit RethinkRecycling.com to
find electronics recycling options:

Volunteer for Minnehaha Creek Watershed Board
The Hennepin County Board of
Commissioners is accepting
applications for two vacancies
on the Minnehaha Creek
Watershed District Board. The
terms for current members Jeffrey
Casale and Sherry White are
expiring, though both are seeking
reappointment.
This board coordinates the
management of water and related
land resources in the watershed
that drains into Lake Minnetonka
and Minnehaha Creek. The
cities of Excelsior, Greenwood,
Long Lake, Minnetonka Beach,
Mound, Orono, St. Bonifacius,
Spring Park, Tonka Bay and
Wayzata lie entirely within the
district. Portions of Deephaven,
Edina, Golden Valley, Hopkins,
Independence, Maple Plain,
Medina, Minneapolis, Minnetonka,
Minnetrista, Plymouth, Richfield,
St. Louis Park, Shorewood and
Woodland are also in the district.
Because of the nature of the
board, it is helpful for members
to have a background in water
conservation, development, law,
engineering, environment or public
administration. Members serve
three -year terms.
The deadline for applications
is February 19 with interviews
to be held at the following board
committee meeting.

Lake Ice is Never Completely Safe
New ice is usually stronger
than old ice. It's February - -the
ice is not new!
Ice seldom freezes uniformly.
It may be a foot thick in one
location and only an inch or
two just a few feet away.
Ice formed over flowing
water and currents is often
dangerous. This is especially
true near streams, bridges and
culverts.
The insulating effect of snow
slows down the freezing
process. Also, ice near shore
can be weaker than ice that is
farther out.
Schools of fish or flocks of
waterfowl can adversely affect
the relative safety of ice. The
movement of fish can bring
warm water up from the bottom

Storm Drains Go to the Lake
he storm drains in many area streets drain directly into local streams, wetlands and lakes. That means anything
that drains from your yard, driveway or other parts of your property into the roadway ends up in our watershed.
In warm weather months, water can often cross lawns to filter much pollution in the runoff, but during winter months
when the ground is frozen, the water drains without the added filtration. Please keep your yards and hard surfaces
clean of salt, debris, pet waste and other pollutants to keep our water system clean.

being removed. See reverse side for tree descriptions.

Shorewood's 2015 Tree Sale
In an effort to diversity the tree stock in the city, Shorewood has combined forces with the City of Minnetonka tree sale.
Shorewood is a city with many ash trees, and the
threat of the Emerald Ash Borer is eminent. The
tree sale offers residents the opportunity to get a
large, balled tree at wholesale prices. By plant-
ing trees now, the city will have established other
trees before the ash borer arrives!
All trees are selected for the west metro area
by an arborist. To view photos of the tree spe-
cies, see the link on the city web site, www.
ci. shore wood. mn. us. All trees are supplied on a
first -come, first -serve basis. The earlier your order
is received, the better your chance of getting your
top selections. Note the pick -up location is at
