April 2015 Shore ReportY "4 1 J ' 4hL # '• Am :iTiTi Comment on Country Club Redevelopment The City of Shorewood is working with Stantec Consulting Services to prepare for future planning of the proposed redevelopment project on the Minnetonka County Club Property. ACitizen Advisory Committee composed of approximately 24 area residents meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month at city hall to discuss concerns, brainstorm ideas, and get information about the proposal. Residents notserving on the advisory committee are able to share thoughts and comments and to view the materials provided to the committee The Step To It Challenge is a fun, light- hearted way to connect with family, friends, and neighbors, and get moving again after a long winter. Taking green strides not only saves natural resources, it helps you increase your physical activity. Walk or bike to your destination, pick up litter in your local park, or help plant a community garden. These activities can help you achieve your goals or maybe win the "Most Active Resident' through an online site accessible at http:// minnetonkacc.mindmixer.com. A link is available on the city web site. Comments from other residents are able to be viewed and as new information is received regarding the redevelopment it will be posted on this site. As of the production of this newsletter, no applications have been received by the city for the development, although the city has been informed that Mattamy Homes has entered into a purchase agreement with the owners of the country club property. award from your community. Bee Not Afraid Spring flowers bring our much needed pollinators back to the neighborhood. Most enjoy seeing the first butterfly flutter by the window - -the first bee does not always create the same joy. Fear of bees is common, and often unfounded. In Minnesota 60 -70% of the bees are nesting bees, according to the University of Minnesota Bee Lab. These bees are solitary and burrow underground to nest. Queen bees nest alone and raise their young. They are very docile and rarely sting. Male nesting bees are more active. They defend the nest and seem aggressive, but actually lack a sting. Relocating Bees Although ground bees tend to be harmless and are actually desirable as pollinators, they don't Recycling April 2015 Weeks f, All recycling must be curbside no later than 7 a.m. on recycling day. Mainland residents recycle April 8 and 22; Island residents recycle April 9 and 23. Report misses: 952.941.5174 always nest in desirable locations. Should nesting bees decide that their ideal nesting location is right at the bottom of your deck step, you don't need to use pesticides to get rid of them. Nesting bees like dry locations, so simply watering the area thoroughly for several days will disrupt the bees and they will relocate on their own. YPlln \A/ .larkPtc R IAlacnc Residents who have aggressive bee problems are often dealing with yellow jackets. One way to tell the difference between nesting bees and yellow jackets are the solitary behavior of the bees. If you see many "bees" coming in and out of the ground nest, they are likely yellow jackets. Yellow jackets are aggressive and you often want them to be located away from living areas. To try to get relocate yellow jacket nests, try pouring water mixed with dish or laundry soap onto the nest for several days. This should be done with caution and is best done at night and when temperatures are dipping close to 50 degrees, as the yellow jackets are less active and have more trouble flying. Get more information on how to safely remove aggressive wasp nests and how to discourage them, on University of Minnesota Extension Service web site: http: / /tinyurl. com/beecontrol. Insecticides should always be a last resort, and do not work well with wasps. Discouraging the nesting site from the beginning is the best form of defense against aggressive wasps. See the city web site under Yard and Garden for additional tips on keeping your yard bee safe. Watershed Grants Available for Landscape The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District has a cost share grant available to residents in the district. This program provides partial payment Lawn Watering Lawn watering uses a significant portion of our water supply. It is important that residents and businesses follow the city's watering ordinance. This allows Shorewood's water system not only an adequate opportunity to replenish the supply in the city's water storage tanks, but also ensures there is enough water for all uses, some of which include vital services such as firefighting. The city's ordinance states that residents and businesses can water before 11 am and after for the installation of raingardens, pervious pavement systems, rainwater capture and reuse systems, and other clean water practices on private lands. Private Ordinance in 4:30 pm, May 1- September 30. Residents are advised to work with their sprinkler system provider to make sure watering times are scheduled to water within ordinance hours. Remember to check the timer on your watering system after power outages so that you are not in violation of the restriction. Fees for violating the water use restrictions are: • First offense - $50 fee • Each additional offense - $25 fee increase (e.g. 2nd violation property owners are eligible for funding. Grants up to 50% of the project or $2,500 are available. For information, go to www. minnehaha creek. org, Effect Maur 1 $75, 3rd violatio $100, etc.) No warnings are given for violation of the watering restrictions. Residents are encouraged to check the city web site for lawncare information which includes lawn water needs. EXEMPTIONS: Private wells are exempt from the ordinance, however, the city encourages homeowners to conserve their water resources during peak hours. Activities such as play toys, car washing, and hand watering are exempt if attended. Call the city at 952.960.7900. if you have questions.
