City Budget Levy Set for 2016
The Shorewood City Council, at its September
14 meeting, adopted a preliminary budget for
2016 of $5,857,087. The budget is primarily funded
through a tax levy of $5,079,408. This amount
represents an increase of 3% over 2015 The
proposed 2016 budget is available for inspection
at City Hall during normal business hours, or on
our web site, www.ci.shorewood.mn.us. A Truth-
In- Taxation public hearing is set for Monday,
December 7, at 7 pm, at Shorewood City Hall.
Staff will present information regarding the budget,
property tax levy, and the property tax impact on
a variety of property types and values. Residents
are encouraged to contact Finance Director
Bruce DeJong at 952.960.7903 with questions or
comments on the proposed budget and tax levy.
School Board Election & Referendum
Voter registration for the November 3, 2015,
general election is open until October 13
and absentee, or early voting is currently taking
place for the Minnetonka and Westonka school
board elections and the two Minnetonka school
district referendum questions. To register to vote
in Minnesota, you must
• be at least 18 -years old on
Election Day
• be a United States citizen
• have resided in Minnesota
for the 20 -day period �O
preceding Election Day
• have any felony conviction
record discharged,
expired or completed I'm
• not be under court - ordered
guardianship where a
court has revoked your
voting rights
• have not been ruled legally incompetent by a
court of law
• be a resident of the jurisdiction and precinct
where you want to vote
Anyone who has voted in the last four years and
has not changed name or address continues to
be a registered voter in Minnesota. New voters,
or those who have moved or changed their name,
must register at least 21 days prior to Election Day

who do not register by October 13 may register at
the polls on Election Day with proper identification.

On the Ballot
Minnetonka
Residents living in the Minnetonka School District
will vote on two referendum levies and for four
seats on the school board. Running unopposed in
the election for school board are Mark E.
Ambrosen, Katie Becker, Lisa Sumner
and Lisa Wagner. The referendum
voters in this district will vote on are:
Question 1: Asks voters to renew and
increase the District's annual operating
levy by $340 per pupil, from $1,250 to
TE
$1,590 per pupil, for taxes payable in
2016, with another increase to $2,046
per pupil for taxes payable beginning
in 2019. Inflationary increases occur
annually during the 10 -year period.
Question 2: Asks voters to renew the
existing capital projects technology levy
at its current rate for 10 years (originally went into
effect in 2007 and expires in 2017).

Westonka
In the Westonka School District, voters will be
electing four school board members for four -year
terms. Three incumbents and one newcomer

Burning Leaves and Yard Waste Prohibited
ccording to city ordinance
608.03, residents may not
burn leaves or grass clippings.
Disposal at a proper compost
facility, backyard composting, or
mulching of leaves and clippings
are recommended. This ordinance
is enforced by the local police
department, and violation can
result in a fine up to $300. For

and even dinner for the family!
There is plenty of fire and life
safety activities, exhibits, and
demonstrations to keep kids of
all ages and adults entertained
while teaching life saving skills and
providing great information. There
is a Free child ID, live residential
sprinkler demonstration, grease
fire prevention station, and fire
truck rides.

booths, games, and hands on

Breaking Ground on Smithtown Rd
On September 14 three of our
city council members joined
Administrator Bill Joynes in breaking
ground for the new Smithtown Road
sidewalk. The sidewalk will extend
from the Eureka Road /Smithtown Rd
sidewalk to the Country Club Road
corner. This project will complete the
pedestrian corridor along Smithtown

for voters. There you can find
information about your polling

precinct, as well as online voter

applications. Voters can also print
out registration and absentee
ballot applications at that site, fill
them out and turn them in to a
local election official.
Pilot Program
Hennepin County has a new pilot
program this year for absentee
voting. All mail absentee ballots
will be processed by Hennepin
County election officials. Voters
may submit an application
requesting an absentee ballot by
mail either to their local election
official or to the county directly,
but the ballot will be issued by,
returned to and processed by
the Hennepin County Elections
division.

Here's how it works:
• Gather up all of your old files, tax returns, bank statements and any other secure papers
you may have (newspapers and non - secure papers should be put in your recycling cart
and not brought for shredding.
• Bring the items in paper bags to the city hall parking lot (bags will be returned)
• Cones will be set up to direct you in one driveway.
• Stay in your vehicle. Volunteers will remove your paper for the shred truck.
What you need to know:
• Event will close during lightning storms.
• You will drive your vehicle into our facility for the process where our staff and volunteers
will unload it for you. Witnessed destruction can happen at that time, if so desired.
• Paper only. Please do not bring any 3 ring binders, plastics, trash or other non -paper
items.
