authority of the Hennepin County Assessor, which
will conduct an "open- book" process for valuation

Watering Ordinance in Effect
Lawn watering uses a significant portion of our
water supply. It is important that residents and
businesses follow the city's watering ordinance.
This allows Shorewood's water system not only an
adequate opportunity to replenish the supply in the
city's water storage tanks, but also ensures there is
enough water for all uses, some of which include
vital services such as firefighting.
The city's ordinance states that residents and
businesses can water before 11 am and after 4:30
pm, May 1- September 30. Residents are advised
to work with their sprinkler system provider to make
sure watering times are scheduled to water within
ordinance hours. Remember to check the timer on
your watering system after power outages so that
you are not in violation of the restriction.
Fees for violating the water use restrictions are
determined by the number of water restriction
violations issued to the owner and are as follows:
• First offense - $50 fee
• Each additional offense - $25 fee increase (e.g.
2nd violation $75, 3rd violation $100, etc.)
No warnings are given for violation of the watering
restrictions.
EXEMPTIONS: Private wells are exempt from the
ordinance, however, the city encourages homeowners to
conserve their water resources during peak hours. Activities
such as play toys, car washing, and hand watering are
exempt if attended. Call the city at 952.960.7900, if you have
questions.

dents recycle May 4 & 18; Islands recycle

Reduce and Reuse- Creating Less Garbage
ou already recycle, it's easy
to put your cans, glass, paper
and plastic into the cart that is
provided for curbside service. But
why is there still so much trash?
Reducing the waste you create
takes thoughtful purchasing.
When you are choosing between
two products, take a look at the
packaging: is one recyclable and
one not? Does one have very
little extra packaging? Could you
buy it without any packaging at
all? Reducing waste becomes
addicting once you set your mind
to it. It can become a family
challenge.
You have reduced your waste,
time to look at reuse. Borrowing,
buying second hand, and donating
usable items are all things that
create less waste going into the
landfill, and likely more money
in your pocketbook.
Reuse Minnesota has a great list
of second hand and borrowing
options. Did you know there
is a tool library in Minneapolis
(http: / /nemtl.org)? You can find
information on many reuse and
second hand options online at
www.reusemn.org.
For more tips and reuse ideas,
see the city web site under
Environment.
Prevention Key to Reducing Mosquito -Borne
W / nth warmer weather right
/ around the corner, officials
with the Minnesota Department of
Health (MDH) and the Metropolitan
Mosquito Control District (MMCD)
are encouraging Minnesotans to
remove from their property any
small water - holding containers
that could fill with rainwater this
spring and be used as breeding
areas by mosquitoes that can
carry disease.
All mosquitoes need water
for their eggs. Mosquitoes that
carry La Crosse encephalitis,
a rare but potentially serious
viral disease, commonly lay their
eggs in stagnant water inside
old tires, buckets, cans, tarps
and anything else that can hold
rainwater for several weeks. While
the kinds of mosquitoes that
carry Zika virus have not been
found to live in Minnesota, they
breed in the same kinds of small
containers. Removing water -
holding containers helps ensure
that those mosquitoes would not
get a foothold in Minnesota if they
were to ever come here.
"When outdoors this spring,
take time to look for water - holding
containers on your property," said
Kirk Johnson, Vector Ecologist at
the Metropolitan Mosquito Control
District. "We still have several
weeks before the mosquitoes
developing in those containers
become adults that can bite
people. Containers are also much
easier to spot now before tree
leaves and growing vegetation
come out."
