"Pooper Scooper" Law in Ef f ect
Proper disposal of waste from domestic pets is required in all areas of Shorewood. The policy states,"The owner of any domestic animal
or any person having control or custody of any animal shall be responsible for cleaning up any feces of the animal and disposing of such
feces in a sanitary manner."
Perhaps the simplest method of feces collection is with the use of a plastic bag. Slip the bag on your hand like a mitten, pick up the
"pile"and turn the bag off of your hand, leaving the contents in an inside-out bag. If that's just a little too"handy"for you, there are the
commercial"pooper scoopers"with a long handle to distance the user from the animal waste. Deposit animal feces in a sealed bag in a
trash receptacle.
Whatever method is chosen, the point is that if you have a dog in your custody someplace other than your own property, you will need
to also have with you a device to pick up their droppings.
ENFORCEMENT
The South Lake Minnetonka Police Animal Control Department is appointed by the City Council as enforcing the agent. Call
763.525.62 10 to report wandering dogs, lost dogs,or other animal issues.
LAWS FOR DOGS
Effective May 1,2003,the City of Shorewood adopted a leash law requiring all dogs on public trails, sidewalks, the Southwest LRT
Regional trail,or along any public right-of-way(streets and roadways),or in any city parks to be on a leash of 6 feet or less at all
times. The person having custody of the dog must have a device, such as a plastic bag,in their possession at all times they are in public
areas for the removal of feces from these locations.Voice command is no longer an option for pets on public properties.A complete
copy of this Ordinance is available at city hall,or online at www.ci.shorewoodmn.us
A Few More Pet Points
Forpet owners and neighbors ofpet owners, below are some related quotes from the City Code. The entire section, Chapter 701,
can be seen at City Hall or on the web at www.ci.shorewood.mn.its
RESTRAINT
All dogs in Shorewood must be on a leash of 6 feet or less when on public trails, sidewalks, streets, city parks and other public properties.
BARKING

noise by any single or combination of dogs which can be heard...from a location outside of the premises...and which noise occurs
repeatedly over at least a five-minute period of time with one-minute or less lapse of time between each animal noise during the five-

one-minute or less lapse of time between each animal noise during the two-minute period between 10 p.m.and 6 a.m."
LICENSING
"Every person who owns a dog over the age of six(6)months shall cause the dog to be registered and licensed... The license period
shall be for the whole or unexpired portion of the year ending on the ensuing December 31." (An application is provided on the back
of this brochure.)

owners shall first obtain a kernel license. This license shall allow an owner to keep up to four(4)dogs over the age of six
(6)months"(Applications are available at City Hall, or online at www.ci.shorewood.mn.us.)
