But why is there still so much trash? Reducing the waste you create takes thoughtful purchasing. When you are choosing between two products, take a look at the packaging: is one recyclable and one not? Does one have very little extra packaging? Could you buy it without any packaging at all? Reducing waste becomes addictive once you set your mind to it. It can become a family challenge. You have reduced your waste, time to look at reuse. Borrowing, buying second hand, and donating usable items are all things that create less waste going into the landfill, and likely more money in your pocketbook. Reuse Minnesota has a great list of second hand and borrowing options. Did you know there is a tool library in Minneapolis (http: / /nemtl.org)? You can find information on many reuse and second hand options online at www.reusemn.org. Elusnam-e maybe NOV No wipes, cooking grease, or paper towels in the pipes! Although many items on the market look like they can be flushed, and might even be labeled flushable, only toilet paper and the human waste that goes with it should be flushed. Unlike toilet paper, which quickly breaks down in water, these other products tend to stay intact, clogging sewer systems and causing overflows into streams or basements from jammed pipes and broken pumps. Despite claims of being "septic safe" and "breaking down like toilet paper" these items just do not break down q u i c k l y enough for sanitary sewer Get Ready for Election 2018 Believe it or not, by the time you receive this newsletter, this year's general election will be less than 20 weeks away! Make sure you educate family members and any cleaning personnel you hire. All wipes and personal care items belong in the garbage, not in the toilet. Keep your pipes (and our pipes) safe and clear so they can be used for what they were originally intended. on June 29, 2018. Use the chart below to determine which trees are best for your site: Species • or • features • .•- ? Height Spread tainer Pagoda Dogwood $45 full sun to This woodland tree is a great replacement for buckthorn. 15-20 ft. 20 -25 #7 shade It gets cream - colored flowers and dark blue fruit. In fall it ft. turns red. Attracts butterflies and songbirds. Blue Beech $75 full sun to Blue beech is a small slow - growing tree. As a landscape 20 -35 ft 20 -35 ft #10 shade plant, it is one of the few trees that thrives in full shade. It is also adaptable to a wide range of soil textures, moisture levels, drainage patterns, and pH levels. In the landscape it is used as a small shade tree, an accent of specimen plant, and in naturalized and woodland set- tings. It is not a preferred food source for deer. Purple Prince $55 full sun Beautiful rose -red flowers and maroon fruit make this a 18 ft 18 ft #7 Crab -Red favorite of songbirds and pollinators. It turns a bronze - gold color in the fall. Cathedral Elm $55 full sun A hybrid of Japanese and Siberian elms, bred to have in- 40 -50 ft 40 -50 ft #10 creased resistance to Dutch elm disease. Tolerant of cold winter temperatures. The fast - growing 'Cathedral' elm has a rounded canopy with dark green foliage that turns yellow in autumn. Plant in well- drained soil if possible, but the 'Cathedral' elm will grow in most soil types. It requires full sunlight to thrive. Commit to pruning regularly in the first 15 years to maintain one main leader and good branching structure. Pruning during the growing season is not recommended. American Larch $75 full sun Minnesota's only deciduous conifer, which means it loses 40 -80 ft 15 -30 ft #10 (Tamarack) its needles in the fall. Each spring, a new set of lush, bright green needles emerge. This tree has a pyrami- dal shape and drooping branches. Tamarack tolerate a variety of soils if mulched with wood chips and watered regularly during periods of drought. This is a great tree to plant in groups along a wetland. White Pine $75 full sun to Fastest growth rate of all the state's pine species. Unlike 25 ft 30 ft #10 part shade other pines, which have rigid needles, white pine needles SOLD OUT are long, bright green and "soft." This tree will not thrive if planted in a wet, heavy clay soil —it is best planted in a well- drained soil. Additionally, the needles may become yellow if soil pH is too high (alkaline); this condition can be treated if you are aware of the issue. Balsam Fir $75 full sun to One of the few pines that will thrive in full shade. Does 50 -75 ft 20 -35 ft #10 full shade well in damp places. Needles are flat and fragrant.
