News for Residents of the City of Shor
Niaht to Unite August 6
horewood residents are encouraged to join
this national celebration of community and
scheduled block parties, cookouts orget-togethers
to get to know neighbors and to promote community
safety.
Register your neighborhood's Night to Unite event
with South Lake Minnetonka Police Department so
police, fire and other city officials can visit when
possible. The city is also able to assist neighborhood
iow high can the grass
W i th the warm, wet weather, vegetation is finally
growing and growing well. Probably too well
judging from the number of calls the city has been
receiving regarding tall grass and weeds.
Allowing grasses and weeds to grow more than
12 inches is considered a nuisance by City Code
(city ordinance 501.04, Subd. 8d). If a property
in Shorewood has grass /weeds over 12 inches,
residents may submit a private property complaint
using the SeeClickFix app available under "I want
to: Report" on the city website. You may also submit
the concern in person at city hall or by phone,
952.960.7900. The property will be inspected by
the public works department. The complaintant's
information is kept confidential by the city, but the
complainant must provide a name, address, and
party planners with recycling containers, compost
containers and on planning a low -waste event.
Contact the city at 952.960.7900 for assistance.
Register your party online at https: / /southlakepd.

registration form.
Get ready for a fun evening with friends
and neighbors which has shown to increase

phone number.
Once a complaint has been made against a
property, city staff inspects the property to verify
the complaint and give the property owner a period
of time to correct the issue. If the issue is not
resolved within the given time period, the city can
have the area mowed and the property owner may
be required to pay for the service. If you have any
questions regarding the process, please contact
the city at 952.960.7900.
Please make arrangements to have your
grass and weeds cut while you are out of town
for extended trips in the summer. It makes your
home look lived in and helps you avoid the costs
of a forced mow.
No plastic bags in the carts
Recycling has been in the news a lot lately due
to shifts in markets and international policy
changes. This has left many residents wondering
what is happening to the recycling placed in
their bins, and what they can do now to support
recycling.
The number one way to support recycling is by
recycling the right stuff. The focus this month is to
make sure no plastic bags end up in the cart. Do
not recycle plastic bags and do not bag recyclables
in a plastic bag.
Keep recycling! Your recyclables are getting
recycled. Unlike on the coasts where they rely
heavily on international markets, recyclers in
Minnesota send most of the material they collect
to local and regional markets to be processed
into new materials. Minnesota state law prohibits
materials separated and collected for recycling
from being trashed.
Contact the city at 952.960.7900 if you are
unsure about whether an item should be recycled
in the curbside cart. A photo of commonly
questioned items can be found on the City of
Shorewood Facebook page, www.facebook.com /

Trash survey results
he trash hauling survey of
residents has been completed
and the results were presented at
the City Council work session on
May 28. A random sample of 400
Shorewood residents who retain
a trash hauler were contacted
between March 5 and 19.
Some of the survey highlights
include 76 percent of residents
believe it is important to have the
ability to continue to chose their
hauler.
Sixty -one percent oppose or
strongly oppose changing the
current trash hauling system.
Hennepin County is requiring
cities to offer Organics recycling
collection beginning in 2023.
Recycling Weeks for
July 2019
All recycling must be curbside no later
than 7 a.m. on recycling day. Mainland
residents recycle July 10 and 24; Island
residents recycle July 11 and 25.
Report misses before noon
the next day: 952.960.7900
Tip of the month: Do not bag recycling
in plastic bags. Keep loose in the cart!
Given Shorewood's size, the city
has the option to have curbside
pick up or a drop -off site.
Forty -eight percent want
curbside collection, with 15
percent preferring a drop -off
location. The city will be looking
at implementing the organics
program over the next couple of
years.
The survey results and the
council presentation are on the
city's website: http: / /ci.shorewood.
mn.us /environment /trash-
hauling.php.
If you have any questions
about the survey results, please
contact Greg Lerud, Shorewood
City Ad min istrator at 52.960.7900.

Lawn care tips to keep lawns and water healthy
id you know that you and your
neighbors have waterfront
property even if you cannot see the
lake? Your yard and the nearest
lake, stream, or wetland are
connected by the nearest storm
drain or ditch.
Rain falls on hard surfaces
such as streets, driveways and
rooftops and flows into the storm
sewer system, which carries it to
the nearest body of water. This
rainfall brings along any pollutants
it has picked up along the way.
You can help reduce the amount
of pollutants entering local lakes,
rivers and streams and save
money by following a few simple
steps:
• Water wisely —You water with
fresh drinking water, so do it right.
If your lawn needs water, do it
in the morning when it's cooler
to avoid evaporation, and make
sure to aim sprinklers so they do
not water hard surfaces. Lawns
typically only need one inch of
water per week, so if it rains, you
can skip the watering.
• Mow three inches or higher —
Mowing grass to a height of three
inches or higher will encourage
thicker and healthier grass.
• Sharpen your mower blades
— Sharper blades will cut grass
to three inches or higher more
effectively.
• Leave grass clippings on lawn
— Leaving your grass clippings on
your lawn puts the same amount
of nutrients back into your grass
as one application of fertilizer. Be
sure to sweep up any clippings that
blow into the street or driveway so
they do not run down the storm
drain.
• Fertilize right — If you choose
to fertilize, only do it in the fall
when it is most effective. Apply
only the amount directed and be
sure to choose a zero - phosphorus
fertilizer. Many lawns already have
plenty of phosphorus in the soil
and any excess will just run off into
local waters and produce algae.
Another alternative to fertilizing is
aerating your lawn.
• Pick up pet waste regularly —
Regular pick -up of pet waste will
keep bacteria from running off into
storm drains and our local waters.
Following these tips will help
keep your lawn healthy while
keeping our waters clean and safe
this summer. Learn more at www.
minnehahacreek.org /education.
