Ket PA,R h r, P. E. 21179 License No. Date Engineering Architecture Surveying Environmental Recommended Rating and Load Posting: (with consideration of Special Hauling Vehicles) Inventory Rating: HS 23.7 Operating Rating: HS 32.6 Recommended Load Posting: None Required Load Rating Notes: • Load capacity ratings shown are based on Virtis (v6.8) rating using Girder Line Analysis • Used timber allowable bending stress fb = 1500 psi • Used 20" tire contact width for LL Dist, Width calculations for analysis of HS Vehicles • Used 15" tire contact width for LL Dist. Width calculations for analysis of Posting Vehicles • LL distribution factors have been manually input into Virtis • Curb, rail and wearing surface dead loads have been distributed uniformly across slab width BridlZe Condition Summary: Bridge No, 27A34 is a 3 -span nail laminated timber slab span bridge supported on timber pile -bent style abutments and piers. The total length of the bridge from back face of abutment to back face of abutment is approximately 52' -0 ". A span layout of 15' -6 "/ 20'- 0 "/15' -6" (between centerlines of substructures) was considered for the load rating calculations. The total width of the bridge slab is 24' -0 ". Timber curbs and scuppers measured at each edge of the bridge constrict the roadway width to 20' -0 ". Plans were not made available for this structure prior to completing the load capacity rating. The timber slab consists of approximately 4" wide timber laminations that run parallel to the centerline of the roadway and span between the bridge substructure units, The individual timbers are nailed together in a specified pattern to create the timber slab which carries traffic across the bridge. The timber slab was measured in the field to be 10" thick for spans 1 & 3 and 12" thick for span 2. There was a 3 1/2" thick average bituminous wearing course present on the bridge slab at the time of the inspection and was considered for the load capacity rating. The top of the timber slab was not visible due to the wearing course atop the bridge, The underside of the timber slab was in very good condition overall. The slab contained minor weathering. The bituminous wearing course contains minor transverse and longitudinal cracks. The timber spreader beams were tight to the underside of the timber slab superstructure, and the standard live load distribution width for this type of structure was used in the load rating calculations. The spreader beams were in good condition with minor horizontal splitting present. The timber railing was in good condition with minor splitting KInDor Bridge Ruing Contract -- Contract No. 1026817 T Hennepin County Bridge No. 27A34 V V IDS1ETH Page 3 of 3 SMITH N®L'TING present. The timber posts contain some moderate sized vertical cracks. The timber pile -bent style abutments each consist of a square timber cap supported atop 8 round timber piles. Each wingwall is supported by an additional pile. Approximately 2 -3' feet of piling was exposed above the in -slope at each abutment. The amount of rip rap protection on the in- slopes was adequate. The timber abutment caps were in very good condition with minor horizontal splitting present. No crushing was found during inspection. The timber piling contain minor vertical splitting. There was minor horizontal splitting found on the timber backing planks, The wingwalls contained minor splitting. Both abutments appeared to be performing as intended. The abutments are adequately supporting the superstructure loads, and there is no need to downgrade the load rating or posting due to the condition of the bridge abutments, The timber pile -bent style piers each consist of a square timber cap supported atop 8 timber piles. The piers contain cross bracing to brace for pier pile sway. The piles contain minor vertical splitting but are in very good condition. There is a timber beam in between the upstream piles to support the piers from impact damage. The timber pier caps have experienced some minor horizontal splitting. The bridge piers are adequately supporting the loads from the superstructure, and there is no reason to downgrade the load rating or posting due to the condition of the piers, The load rating and load posting calculations for this structure are controlled solely by the capacity of the timber slab superstructure. The load posting analysis for this bridge results in values which do not require this bridge to be posted according to current Mn /DOT load posting guidelines. The capacity of the bridge is adequate to support the posting vehicles currently being used by Mn/DOT. Also, there are no restrictions on overweight vehicles.
