PARK COMMISSION MINUTES
CITY OF SHOREWOOD
JULY 18, 1977, MINNEWASHTA SCHOOL
7:30 p.m.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman John Breckheimer. Members present:
Bill Wyatt, Jim Heiland, Tom Schmid, Judy McCuskey, Win Drews.
Also present Councilman Bill Keeler; Howie Gans, South Tonka Little L gue;
Debby Fellman, Minnesota Environmental Science Foundation; Warren Clagu
Community Soccer Program; Dale Evans, South Tonka Little League.
Howie Gans spoke in support of Shorewood purchasing the New Field area om
South Tonka Little League.
MOTION: Wyatt moved, Heiland seconded, that the Park Commission
recommend to the City Council that Shorewood purchase the
New Field area (8.2 acres) from the South Tonka Athletic
Association for from $4,000 to $6,000 with the provision:
that the property be leased to South Tonka Little League
at $1.00 per year, and that Shorewood has the option to
develop the remainder of land for park purposes. The
South Tonka Athletic Association would build a Babe Ruth
field and maintain both ball fields. Carried.
Debbie Fellman, MESF, reviewed the trail guidelines for the Long Range ark
Plan booklet. She provided a written poll to help members establish priorities
on parks, bike trails, and recreation trails,' She then discussed the b okleot
as to the contents, introduction, cover. She will have 100 copies prin ed,,
spiral — bound She will have booklets printed in one month. Commission
approved this progress report,
Warren Clague discussed the use of Badger Field for football and socce These
groups would like to schedule beginning August 23rd through October, fo tball—
Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and one --half day Saturday and soccer—Mondey and
Wednesday evenings and one —half day Saturday.
MOTION: Heiland moved, Drews seconded, that the Park Commission
recommend to the Ctiy Council an agreement be drawn up
with the MAA and Community Soccer groups on the use of
Badger Field with pro —rated maintenance (Suggested: City
Community Soccer, MAA, one —third each) costs. Groups to
provide advanced schedules of use. Carried.
Breckheimer passed around a letter from Marlyn Thomson, Minnetonka Commtnity
services, inviting the Commission to send a representative,to a joint fcrum
Thursday, July 21st, School Administration Building, 7:30 p.m.
MOTION: Drews moved, Heiland seconded, that Councilman Keeler pursue
the idea with the City Council regarding changing the park
acquisition from a subdivision, development to make the cess,
and options more equitable to all concerned. Carried.
The Cathcart building was discussed with Bill Wyatt to further contact rn
Watten to determine where the project now stands.
