031885 PK MINCITY OF SHOREWOOD PARK COMMISSION MEETING MONDAY, MARCH 18, 1985 M I N U T E S CALL TO ORDER COUNCIL CHAMBERS 5755 COUNTRY CLUB ROAD 7:00 PM The Park Commission of March 18, 1985 was called toy order by Chair Lindstrom at 7:07 PM. ROLL CALL Present: Chair Lindstrom, Commissioners Carl, Butterfield, Jakel and Kooi; and Deputy Clerk Niccum. Absent: Commissioner Schmid APPROVAL OF MINUTES Kooi moved, Jakel seconded, to approve the Minutes of February 18, 1985 as written. Motion carried unanimously. NEW PARK COMMISSIONER VOTING A white ballot vote was taken. Carl moved, Butterfield seconded, to recommend to Council to appoint Richie Hemping of the Christmas Lake area as the new Park Commissioner. Motion carried unanimously. • ICE PROGRAM REVIEW Commissioner Jakel reported on the 1984 -85 Skating season, saying that he felt it was a good season. The vandalism problems were very slight. He did suggest the following: 1. If there is a clearable snowfall, and the City crew is not available to clear rinks, could the attendants be paid to come to work early enough to have one -half of the rinks cleared by regular opening time. 2. That the holidays on the Minnetonka School calendar be treated as regular holidays when scheduling is done. FIRE RING - CATHCART PARK Commission discussed sunken fire pit for Cathcart Park for both summer and winter use, with wood only being left there in the winter. They asked staff to check with the Chanhassen fire marshall. Kooi moved, Jakel seconded, to have staff get estimates of fire ring as shown in sketch. Motion carried unanimously. PARKS - UPKEEP AND REPAIRS Commission discussed the different City Parks and what needs to be done to each one. Butterfield moved, Jakel seconded, that the Park Commission schedule visits to City parks to take a Capital Facilities Inventory. PARK COMMISSION MEETING MONDAY, MARCH 18, 1985 page two • Staff is requested to check with Don Zdrazil about repair of crawl spaces under Cathcart warming house. CENTURY CLUB A. Assign a Liaison - tabled B. Some phase of membership - Butterfield - Commission complemented Commissioner Butterfield on her presentation and decided to continue discussion at a later date, along with A, C and D. C. Recognized contributers in athletics - tabled D. Chairman - tabled GRANTS Commission discussed possible uses of Grant monies, taking into consideration the fact that the City may have to match or exceed the amount. Various suggestions were: Improving the railroad line trail Bikeway trail down Smithtown Road (decided too expensive as cost years ago was high). Freeman Park • a. Trail b. Parking lot c. Road connecting with present road Carl moved, Butterfield seconded, to have staff ask Public Works Director Zdrazil to give an estimate on costs for doing Freeman Park Trail: Staking out trail a minimum of 10' wide. Grading and leveling. Spreading wood chips around the trail. Motion carried unanimously. REFORESTATION Commission discussed reforestation and where they could get trees at low cost. They would like to finish landscaping the entrances to Freeman Park. 0". I=11.1VA The Commission discussed Arbor Day and decided that it is too late to plan any- thing for this year.
