Proaerty Valuation Notices Mailed
Hennepin County is in the process of mailing
property valuation notices to Shorewood
residents —watch for it in your mail. Residents who
have questions regarding their property valuation
notice orwho wish to discuss the estimated market
value for their property should call the Hennepin
County Assessor, 952.249.4640.
If you are not satisfied after discussing the
information with an assessor, you may appeal your
valuation notice at the Open Book meeting. The
Open Book meeting for Shorewood is scheduled
for Monday, May 5, from 5 pm - 7 pm at City Hall.
The meeting is conducted under the authority of
the Hennepin County Assessor, which will conduct
an "open- book" process for valuation appeals. At
the Open Book meeting, the county assessor's
staff will review the valuation with the property
owner. The valuation reflects a property's value
on January 1, 2014, and is used for property taxes
payable in 2015. Anyone who is unable to attend
the meeting on May 5 may retain their right to
proceed to the County Board meeting. You must
file with the State Tax Court by April 30. Specific
information about this is listed on the back of your
valuation notice.
Become an Election Judge
lection judges ensure that the voting process
goes smoothly and honestly. Serving as
an election judge is a great way to meet your
neighbors and protect one of our most cherished
freedoms - -the rightto vote. Judges are needed for
both the August 12 state primary election and the
November 4 state general election. This is a paid
opportunity and training is provided. Juniorelection
judge positions are also available. Students age 16
and over may serve as a junior election judge. For
more information, contact the city at 952.960.7911,
or see the city web site, wwwci.shorewood.mn.us,
under elections.
Tree Salo. Extended to April 11
The city tree sale still has some Hackberry ($67),
Japanese Tree Lilac ($51) and White Cedar
($30) available. Please see the order form online
at www.ci.shorewood.mn.us, or call city hall at
952.960.7900 to reserve your trees.
The city encourages residents to add a few
different trees to their property in an effort to
diversify the tree population in the city. By adding
trees now, property values will not be adversely
affected by tree loss in the event of tree diseases
and pests. Trees selected for this sale were
recommended by a local arborist as being good
trees for the Shorewood growing environment.
Links to tree descriptions are posted on the city
web site. Before you dig, call Gopher State One
Call at 8 -1 -1 to have underground utilities located.

as special events, recycling, park programs and
city news. Residents are encouraged to sign up for
these email notices on the city web site, under Sign

Keeping Pollinators Safe in Shorewood
he controversy over what
is reducing the population
of bees and some butterflies
continues. One thing is certain,
we need pollinators for our food
supply.
Agroup of concerned residents
has approached the city about
becoming a Bee Safe Community.
This group specifically would
like to see the city stop use of
neonicotinoid pesticides and other
chemicals which are suspected
to harm bees and other helpful
pollinators. The City Council is
reviewing the information, but all
property owners are encouraged
to educate themselves on the safe
and reduced use of pesticides in
home gardens and lawns. A few
tips from Beyond Pesticides to
help keep youryard pollinatorsafe
include:
• Only use sprays during non -
pollinating seasons, before or
after flowering, and in the early
morning before most pollinators
are active.
• Spotspray ratherthan spraying
entire yards and gardens.
• Use "home remedies" such as
apple cider vinegar which can
kill weeds. This is especially
helpful in sidewalk cracks.
• Pull weeds before they spread
and get out of control.
• Learn why pests are attracted
to your home or yard. A simple
internet search can give you
many safe methods to get rid of
pests, but more importantly, find
out why they are drawn there in
the first place.
Watch the city web site under
yard and garden for ideas on
safe and organic methods of
controlling pests and weeds.
Lastly, read instructions
thoroughly. Know the specifics
of any chemicals you might use.
Don't assume you know the
procedures or risks.
Lawn Watering Ordinance in Effect May 1
Lawn watering uses a significant
portion of our water supply.
It is important that residents
and businesses follow the city's
watering ordinance. This allows
Shorewood's water system not
only an adequate opportunity to
replenish the supply in the city's
water storage tanks, but also
ensures there is enough water for
all uses, some of which include
vital services such as firefighting.
The city's ordinance states
that residents and businesses
can water before 11 am and after
4:30 pm, May 1- September 30.
Residents are advised to work
with their sprinkler system provider
to make sure watering times
are scheduled to water within
ordinance hours. Remember to
check the timer on your watering
system after power outages so
that you are not in violation of the
restriction.
Fees for violating the water use
restrictions are determined by
the number of water restriction
violations issued to the owner and
are as follows:
• First offense - $50 fee
• Each additional offense - $25
fee increase (e.g. 2nd violation
$75, 3rd violation $100, etc.)
Garden Volunteers Needed
Each spring a group of
dedicated volunteers work in
Shorewood Parks to prepare the
gardens for summer splendor.
The city is looking for volunteers
to fill spots in our adopt -a- garden
program. A small stipend is
available for the purchase of
plants and materials. Some of the
gardens are complete and just
need summer upkeep and a few
annuals planted in the beds for
additional summer color.
This is a great project for a
No warnings are given for violation
of the watering restrictions.
Residents are encouraged
to check the city web site for
lawncare information which
includes lawn water needs.
EXEMPTIONS: Private wells are exempt
from the ordinance, however, the city
encourages homeowners to conserve
their water resources during peak
hours. Activities such as play toys, car
washing, and hand watering are exempt
