Pollinators, such as butterflies and moths, hummingbirds, many bugs, and bees and wasps, are responsible for much of our food source. It is easy to find articles on how to protect our pollinators through reducing the amount and types of pesticides we use, but equally important is making our local properties into friendly habitats for pollinators. One way to do this is to plant native plants. Native plants thrive in our environment, surviving in our specific climate. The plants are often perennial, and can often be found for a reasonable price. A list of nurseries which offer native plants grown without the harmful Know Lake and Beach Conditions The recent closure of Lake Minnetonka due to E -coli levels brought much publicity to an issue we actually face each year in local lakes. Although the Lake Minnetonka closure was due to sewage, generally the problem stems with a more common problem: goose droppings. Each summer, local beaches are closed after testing by the Hennepin County Health Department when water tests by the beach show high levels of E -coli. When tests are high, beaches are posted "closed" until the test becomes normal. Hennepin County now has an online map of all beaches in the county so you can check for beach closings before you go. Go to http: / /www.hennepin.usl residents/health- medical/public-swim-beaches; a link to the site is available under Lakes and Wetlands on the city web page. acteria and viruses in the water can cause some ear and eye infections, stomachaches, diarrhea, and flu -like symptoms. The Centers for Disease Control has the following recommendations for staying healthy while enjoying the beach: -Wait 24 hours to swim after a heavy rainfall. -Shower after being at the beach. -Don't mouth or swallow water. -Wash your hands thoroughly uncoated brown boxboard. Plastic bags: Retail shopping bags should be all placed in one bag and placed in the recycling cart. Egg cartons: #1 plastic may be recycled; paper cartons should be composted. Plastic garden pots: May go in the recycling cart if clean. neonictonoid pesticides can be found at www.hummingforbees. com. The list on the web site is not complete, but it gives residents a few locations to start with. If you go to a local nursery, just ask for plants grown without "neonics ". Most plants will be enjoyed for years, and you will have done your part in creating a safe habitat for our pollinators. before eating and after using the bathroom. -Don't swim if you're sick, or have a weakened immune system. -Put tight- fitting rubber or plastic pants on children who are wearing diapers and those who are not toilet- trained. -Take your children for frequent bathroom breaks. -Don't attract waterfowl to the beach by feeding ducks, geese, gulls, etc. -Pick up your trash. -If you boat, properly dispose of waste.
