Absentee Voting Information
A bsentee Voting for the Primary Election is June
27 — August 11. Eligible Shorewood voters
may vote by absentee ballot for any reason, or if
they are unable to vote in person on Election Day.
Details on absentee voting can be found on the
city website or by calling Jean at 952.960.7911.
ig for Office
Eligible voters have the opportunity not only
to vote, but to run for political office. While
some political offices may seem a bit much for the
average resident, many find running for city council
a valuable experience where they can serve their
community. This year there are two city council
positions and the mayor position on the ballot. To
file for office, you simply stop by city hall, pay a
$2 filing fee, and fill out a simple form. From there
campaigning is up to you. See Elections on the city
web site for additional information.

Backyard Composting
ood and yard waste accounts
for about 11 percent of the
garbage thrown away in the Twin
Cities metro area. That's over
two pounds per person per week!
Much of this waste can be put to
better use. Many types of food
scraps, along with leaves and
yard trimmings, can be combined
in your backyard compost bin to
create a valuable soil additive
for your lawn and garden. That's
recycling at its best!

Be a Bee Safe Yard
Humming for Bees, the non-
profit organization that is
working to protect bees and
pollinators through safe yard and
landscape practices, has a Bee
Safe Yard program. To register
your yard as Bee Safe, you must
sign a pledge agreeing to 1) to
plant only neonicotinoid/systemic-
free plants, including bee favored
plants, 2) to not use insecticides
and fungicides and utilize best
practices for herbicides in your
yard, and, 3) to continue to learn
about the needs of bees and all
pollinators. By agreeing to these
three things, you qualify as a Bee
Safe Yard and are encouraged
to get one of the yard signs from
www.hummingforbees.com to
promote the cause. The web site

Keep An Eye Out for AIS
The Minnehaha Creek
Watershed District (MCWD)
is watching closely for any new
aquatic invasive species (AIS)
infestations this season, but we
can't be everywhere at once.
Help be our eyes on the ground!
Early detection of a new
invasive species can allow for
rapid response and increased
awareness ofAIS issues in a lake.
In some cases, these actions can
prevent a full -blown infestation.
MCWD staff is monitoring
highly -used lakes for signs of a
variety of invasive species and
continues to help fund inspectors
at public boat launches. If you
see a suspicious plant or animal
in a water body, please contact
our AIS Specialist immediately
at (952) 471 -7873 or efieldseth@
minnehahacreek.org.
There are many ways to spread
invasive plants and animals that
threaten the health of lakes. It's
notjust boaters who need to take
precautions -- aquatic invasive
species (AIS) like zebra mussels
or milfoil can travel via canoes,
docks, and boat lifts. They can
also spread when people dump
a bait bucket or aquarium into a
water body or storm drain.
Anyone bringing a boat, canoe,
kayak, paddle board or other
water - related equipment into
a new body of water should
thoroughly clean, drain, and dry it
before entering and after leaving.
M
Those who hire a professional
to remove their dock or boat lift
should make sure the person
or business is a certified Lake
Service Provider from the MN
DNR, which ensures they have
received training on how to
prevent the spread of AIS. Dump
bait and aquarium plants and
fish in a waste bin, not in a lake,
stream or storm drain.
AIS can cause significant long-
term damage to Minnesota's
precious water bodies, and can
keep us from enjoying them in
ways we have in the past. Learn
more about steps you can take to
preventthe spread of AIS at www.
minnehahacreek.org /AIS.
LRT Bridge Breaks Ground This Summer
New trail bridge will be under
onstruction at the Lake
Minnetonka LRT Regional Trail
over County Road 19 between
the Cities of Tonka Bay and
Shorewood. The project will
result in a safe trail crossing
at County Road 19 and local
trail connections to both cities.
Construction is anticipated to
begin by July 2014, and be
completed by the end of June
30, 2015.
The trail will be opened during
construction with a detour through
Manitou Park on the west side
and a local trail connection on the
vacated Bay Street on the east
side. The detour will be signed.
This is a Three Rivers Park
District project. Please direct
questions to district offices at
763.559.9000.
Pull Invasive Garlic Mustard Soon
That pretty green plant with
white flowers that is popping
up all over your garden or open
space is not a friendly plant,
Garlic Mustard is an invasive
plant that takes over areas
very quickly, and prohibits the
growth of other native vegetation.
Although it pulls easily in the early
summer, it is very aggressive,
so the number of plants can
be overwhelming. The pulled
plants cannot be composted, as
the seeds continue to produce,
and the pulled plants cannot be
placed back on soil, as they will
re root.
If you start to tackle the garlic
mustard problem, pull them
before they seed. Shake the
dirt from the roots and leave
the plants so the roots will dry
completely. Once the plant is
completely dry, it is safe to throw
in the compost, as long as there
are no seed pods. If seed pods
are present, cut the pods off and
follow the drying out method for
the remainder of the plant. If you
are willing to tackle public areas
of the city, please contact the city
at 952.690.7906.
