The 2020 Census is officially underway, marking
an important milestone for the nation's once -
in-a- decade head count. Counting all residents is
required by the U.S. Constitution and is used to
determine the number of seats in the U.S. House of
Representatives and to define legislative districts.
It is also used to make many planning decisions
about community services, like where to provide
services for the elderly, locate job training centers,
determine where to build new roads and schools,
and to distribute federal funds to state and local
governments.
In mid - March, households will begin receiving
information on how to respond to the 2020 Census.
ByApril 1, every household will receive an invitation
to participate in the 2020 Census. You will have

receive a Market Value Notice from Hennepin
County. This notice will affect property taxes
assessed in 2019, payable in 2020.
If you believe the property information on your
value notice is incorrect, or you disagree with the
value or classification, contact the local assessor

by mail. Completing the information right away
prevents the need for follow -up and saves the
Census valuable time and money, so residents
are encouraged to complete the information in a

Recycling Weeks for
March 2020
All recycling must be curbside no later
than 7 a.m. on recycling day. Mainland
residents recycle March 4 and 18; Islands
recycle March 5 and 19.

Think before you throw
he city recycling contract
requires Shorewood to pay
extra if too much "trash" is put
in the curbside recycling carts.
Residents generally do a greatjob
keeping non - recyclables out of the
cart, but there are some areas that
can be improved.
Not in the cart
Plastic bags. Do not recycle your
plastic bags in the cart and do not
bag recyclables in a plastic bag.
Plastic bags can be recycled at
some retail outlets (Cub, Target,
Staples, etc.).
Paper towels, plates, tissues.
Although these can be put in an
organics bin, the type of paper
used and the food residue makes
these non - recyclable. A list of free
organics drop -off locations are
listed on the city website under
Recycling.
Shredded paper. We
used to say put it in
a paper bag, but now
they don't want it in the
cart at all. Save your
paper for one of the
city shred events, or
small amounts can be
composted.
Scrap metal and pans.
They are metal, which can be
recycled, but they need to be
taken to a drop -off center and
should not be in the cart.
Large plastics and Tupperware.
Although many are made from
plastics that can be recycled,
these plastic items require special
handling and should not be placed
in the recycling cart. The same
goes for black plastic and garden
pots.

Where do you live?
You thought you lived in
Shorewood. Your zip code
is 55331 or 55364, but your mail
comes addressed to Excelsior or
Mound. Do you live in Shorewood?
Yes.
Although several communities
share the 55331 (mainland) or
55364 (islands) zip code, you
still live in and pay taxes to City
of Shorewood. In fact, if you
page photo album for pictures
of common items that cause
confusion.
Keeping the recycling cart free
of non - recyclables or recyclables
not collected curbside keeps
recycling costs down and also
makes it easier for the material to
be sold in recycling markets.
In Minnesota, it is illegal for
recyclables to be collected and
landfilled. If you are recycling
correctly, your items are being
recycled.
put Shorewood as your mailing
address, it will still get to you as
long as the zip code is correct.
When you are putting your
address on property tax or legal
documents (including Real
ID and other state ID cards),
use Shorewood as your city of
residence. If it is only for postal
mail or deliveries, Excelsior or
Mound is fine.
We are happy to serve you
as Shorewood city staff and city
council. We are glad you are in
Shorewood. Stop by city hall or
watch for the city at area special
events in 2020 to mark your
spot on the Shorewood map.
Thank you for being a part of our
community.
