23-056 Establishing Juneteenth as a City HolidayWHEREAS Juneteenth (June 19) has been recognized as a new federal holiday celebrating freedom from slavery in the United States; and WHEREAS, the State of Minnesota outlines holidays in State Statute and after being duly passed in both the House (HF 48) and the Senate (SF 13), the Governor signed the bill into law on February 3, 2023 recognizing Juneteenth as a state holiday; and WHEREAS, Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States; and WHEREAS, the bill was originally slated togo into effect on August l, 2023, which would not have affected the ZO23existing holiday calendar and council meeting schedules for the current calendar year; and Shorewood will recognize Juneteenth as a holiday beginning June 19, 2023; and WHEREAS, the Shorewood Personnel Policy shall be amended with the addition of Juneteenth asanobserved holiday. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Shorewood City Council establishes Juneteenth (June 19) as a City of Shorewood holiday with the closure of City offices; and the date and rules of observance of the holiday shall be as specified in Minnesota Statutes as written and/or Passed and duly adopted b»the Council ofthe City ofthis 12m day ofJune, 30I3.
