ORDINANCE 609:
AN ORDINANCE OF THE
CITY OF SHOREWOOD
TO REGULATE ELECTRIC
BICYCLE USE
Section 1. THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SHOREWOOD,
MN, ORDAINS: Chapter 614 is
hereby added to the Shorewood
City Code as follows:
CHAPTER 614
ELECTRIC
BICYCLE REGULATION
614.01 PURPOSE.
The city has an interest in regu-
lating the operation of electric bicy-
cles within the city limits to ensure
the safety of its residents.
614.02 DEFINITION.
ELECTRIC BICYCLE. Electric
Bicycles, which are commonly re-
ferred to as e-bikes, include Class
1 electric -assisted bicycles, Class
2 electric -assisted bicycles, and
Class 3 electric -assisted bicycles
as defined in Minnesota Statute
169.011, subd 15a, 15b, and 15c,
respectively. This chapter does not
prohibit the operation of any manu-
al or motorized wheelchair, as de-
fined by Minn, Stat. 169.011, subd.
93, or electronic personal assistive
mobility device, as defined in Minn.
Stat. 169.011, subd. 26.
614.03 ELECTRIC BIKE
USAGE
Electric bicycles operated within
the City shall comply with Minneso-
ta State Statutes and the following
additional requirements:
Subd. 1. Any person under the
age of 18 operating or
riding on an electric
bicycle shall wear a
helmet or other
protective headgear
approved for bicycle riding
by the United States
Department of
Transportation or the
American National
Standards Institute (ANSI).
Subd. 2. No person shall operate
an electric bike on
natural or artificial turf,
playfield, playground,
court, ice rink, natural
area, or structure located
in a designated public
park.
614.04 VIOLATIONS.
Any violation of the provisions
hereof or of the statutes adopted
by reference in § 610.01 is a viola-
tion of this chapter when it occurs
within the city. Any person thus vio-
lating any provision of this chapter
shall be guilty of a petty misde-
meanor.
Section 2. This ordinance
adopting Ordinance 609 Regulat-
ing Electric Bicycle Use shall take
effect upon publication in the City's
official newspaper.
