Land Conservation and Environmental Committee Tuesday, November 30, 1999 MINUTES Meeting called to order at 5:48 p.m. by Chair Fred Bruno. ROLL CALL Present - Chair Fred Bruno, Donna Woodruff, Joel Jurgens, Tom Schmid, Lucinda Kircher and Brad Neilsen, Planning Commissioner Absent Dave Gosen, Paula Berndt REVIEW AGENDA Election of officers was deleted, because that was completed at the November 9, 1999 meeting. APPROVAL OF MINUTES • Joel Jurgens should have been listed as absent at the last meeting. Motion by Donna Woodruff, second by Fred Bruno. The minutes were approved as changed 510. STATUS OF GIDEON'S GLEN PROJECT Brad Neilsen reported that the city is waiting to hear about the grant application from Met Council. The Metro Greenways grant is due in January and Jim Hurm, City Administrator has three other grant applications. Brad Neilsen commented that the mayor wants the city staff to keep this project in the public eye by reporting at all meetings. Fred Bruno has submitted an article for the next city newsletter about the Land Conservation and Environmental committee, but did not mention the Gideon's Glen project specifically. Fred Bruno will continue to do monthly newsletter articles. Brad Neilsen noted that the Watershed District is still the committee's best hope for funding. The committee discussed learning more about the Watershed District and wants to show interest. Fred Bruno will contact Eric Evanson to invite him to speak at the next meeting of this committee. There will be a special invitation to the public for this meeting in the city newsletter, if the speaker is able to attend. Lucinda Kircher about the funding from Metro Greenways. Brad Neilsen noted that there may not be any money granted, but that Metro Greeenways has in the past • given grants for very large projects, such as 40-50 acres in Richfield. projects, possibly in connection with Arbor Day. This fits with the public relations • aspect of this committee. PUBLIC RELATIONS Fred Bruno has submitted an article for the City of Shorewood newsletter. There could be a fair or Arbor Day seedling tree distribution. Several informational meetings have been discussed for which the city newsletter could have a special announcement and also have the meeting taped for cable TV. Lucinda Kircher has done seedling tree planting projects with schools and preschools. Joel Jurgens said he could also work on getting seedlings. Brad Neilsen said that the city had done Arbor Day tree give-aways in the past. Fred Bruno suggested that a committee member could speak before his Rotary Club. The DNR or Soil Conservation could also be included in educational meetings. WORK PLAN There was no further discussion. UPDATE ON INTERN SEARCH Joel Jurgen reported that two applications had been received and interviews • will be Wednesday, December 1, 1999. Jim Hurm and Joel Jurgens will conduct the interviews. Brad Neilsen has been asked to participate or submit questions. The intern hours are to be 10 per week. MEETING DATES AND TIMES The next meeting will be December 21, 1999 at 5:45 p.m. at city hall. The meeting on January 11, 2000 will be at 5:45 p.m. with a speaker for the Watershed District at approximately 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2000, at 5:45 p.m. will be the meeting that Joel Jurgens will discuss spring care of trees. The January and February meetings will have special notice in the city newsletter, if the speakers are available. It was moved by Tom Schmid and seconded by Donna Woodruff to accept the resignation of Dave Gosen from the Land Conservation and Environmental Committee per his request dated November 29, 1999 to Jim Hurm. Approved 510.
