Adopting Solid Waste Source Reduction Plan
WHEREAS, the City of Shorewood wishes to be in compliance with
Hennepin County Solid Waste Master Plan.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the following Solid Waste
Source Reduction Plan be adopted:
Solid Waste Source Reduction Plan
I. Definition
A. Source reduction will be those practices and procedures
by the city of Shorewood implemented to reduce, reuse,
and recycle as much of the solid waste stream as
reasonably possible. Emphasis will be given to
purchasing practices that strongly consider recycled
and/or reusable materials and those products that use
less energy. The use of virgin materials or products
which produce hazardous waste in their manufacture, use
or disposal will be closely monitored.
II. Goals
A.
The Objective will be to be in compliance with the goals
objectives of the Hennepin County Solid Waste Master
Plan.
B. To provide workable and useful reduction information and
techniques to residents and businesses of Shorewood.
C. Reduce cost of operation for the City.
D. Develop safe and useful environmental practices.
E. Organize a volume based residential trash system.
III. Existing Source Reduction Activities
A. Separate and recycle City office paper.
B. Purchase as much paper as possible from recycled stock.
C. Staff uses their own reusable containers for beverages.
D. Use Staff and Council communications binder to reduce the
paper flow.
IV. Planned Source Reduction Activities
A.
Provide continued Staff training.

B. Work with suppliers to reduce or reuse packaging.
C.
When replacing or purchasing office equipment, when
scheduled or economics dictate, purchase high efficiency
equipment to enable less paper to be used. Such as copy
machine that copies both sides of the paper at the same
time, or word processors or computers requiring less
printing.
D. Purchasing: Buy only in quanti ties that can be used
within the shelf life.
E. Improve inventory systems to reduce obsolescence.
F. Buy products that are durable, have long warranties and
are repairable.
G. Buy environmentally friendly products.
H. Create new uses for materials when possible.
I. Reduce or eliminate, when possible, the size or quantity
of memos.
J. Remove needless names from mailing lists.
V. Education and Promotion Plan
A.
A copy of this paper will be made available to Staff.
B. Regular and timely Staff meetings will be held by the
City's Recycling Coordinator and Purchasing Agent to
implement programs and provide current information.
VI. Implementation Date and Plan
A. Implementation will begin immediately and as new methods
and opportunities arise.
