RESOLUTION NO. 37-91 A RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING MAY 18 - 25 AS INTERNATIONAL SPECIAL OLYMPICS WEEK WHEREAS, the Eighth International Special Olympics Games for athletes with mental retardation -- the largest sporting event in the world held in 1991 and the largest international multi-sport event ever held in Minnesota -- will be held July 19 through 27, 1991; and WHEREAS, over 6,000 athletes with mental retardation from nearly 90 countries will be competing in various events including swimming and diving, track and field, basketball, bowling, cycling, equestrian, football (soccer), gymnastics, powerlifting, rollerskating, softball, table tennis, team handball, tennis and volleyball; and WHEREAS, the Shorewood City Council desires to encourage those in the Shorewood community to support these events through the process of building a community awareness program regarding the Special Olympics and what it does for people who have mental retardation. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Shorewood as follows: 1. That the City of Shorewood endorses the 1991 International Special Olympics Games to be held in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area July 19 through 27, 1991. 2. That the City Council of the City of Shorewood hereby proclaims May 18 through May 25, 1991, as SPECIAL OLYMPICS WEEK. ADOPTED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SHOREWOOD this 8th day of April 1991.
